About YMCA Saskatoon

Day of Caring® is a partnership between United Way of Saskatoon and Area, business and labour groups, local sponsors and United Way funded agencies and programs. This event is an opportunity for participants to experience the rewards of volunteerism, demonstrating what a difference they can make in our community by working together.

In 2016, the YMCA of Saskatoon was fortunate enough to have three separate groups donate their time and energy to improving our facilities and helping in our mission of Building Healthy Communities.

On Monday, May 16, a team of volunteers from the University Heights branch of RBC came out to the YMCA Sutherland Childcare Centre to help spruce up the playground for the kids.

The team painted and stained benches and play structures, re-did some brick pathway, cleaned up under the hedges and prepared a flowerbed.

On Tuesday, June 14 a group of workers from the Cargill facility in Clavet descended in force on the same playground and refurbished a sandbox area, chopped down about 80 feet of overgrown hedges in preparation for a new fence, cleanded around bushes, expanded the paved walkway at the street and installed a basement window well. Cargill will also be footing the bill for a new chainlink fence to keep the kids safe - a gesture for which we can't thank them enough!

On Wednesday, June 15 the staff from the RBC branch at Avenue C and Circle Drive gave their time and energy to the playground behind the downtown YMCA building, preparing flowerbeds and installing new landscaping ties.

Were the YMCA to pay for the labour involved in all these projects, we would be able to sponsor far fewer children and families for our programs like Before and After School Care, summer camps and swimming lessons. Our great corporate partners have had a very real impact on improving our community, and we thank them from the bottom of our hearts!

I'm really enjoying the yin yoga! The building itself has a nice atmosphere, and the instructor has such a calm and peaceful presence.

Squash courts could use some upgrades but overall a good place to go.

Very friendly staff, and facilities are clean. My only complaint is the gym is on the smaller side, and in two separate areas. You can still get a good workout in though.

I can't say anything bad about YMCA. I tried out their weightlifting center. As a weightlifter I hated the gym. That's me. The pool and basketball court were cool options if I used them

I was invited by a friend to play squash. When I arrived I was greeted by a friendly clerk. I told them that I'm meeting someone. Apparently she knew who my host was and that he was already changing. She asked me to fill out a form and to produce an ID. I told that I've misplaced my wallet recently but if it's alright I can show my health card. She and her colleague were adamant that I produce a picture ID or a picture of it. It so happens that I do have a picture in my phone along with hundreds of other pictures. As I'm scrolling through my pictures looking for it, the clerk tells me that picture ID is important because we have kids on the premise. I don't understand why she felt the need to tell me this. What is she insinuating? When my friend arrived at the front, she asked him if I was with him. When he confirmed that I'm his guest, the clerk tells me that I am good to go. I don't understand why the picture ID all of a sudden is not needed? Why did they felt the need to keep me there, when the form was fully filled? I was extremely embarrassed and wanted to show my ID to prove my existence. Once I showed her the ID, I asked her what is my year of birth. She didn't know. Then what purpose did this exercise serve besides embarassing and belittling me? Talking to several people I'm informed that this sort of thing is called racial profiling. I suppose my sort of people shouldn't go there.
