Income Replacement Indemnity (IRI) Coverage and Extension

July 12, 2022

If you’re injured in an auto accident, Income Replacement Indemnity (IRI) replaces your income if you can’t go back to work due to your injuries.

IRI has a cap and if you’re a higher income earner making over $108,000 this year, you should consider an extension to your IRI coverage to help replace your income.

At Western, we take pride in exceeding expectations by delivering the right insurance solution at every opportunity. Because we care.

To ensure you and your family are protected in the event of an injury, let’s review the basics of IRI Coverage and IRI Extension.

How does IRI help me if I can’t go back to my full-time job?

Income Replacement Indemnity replaces 90% of your net income, up to a maximum amount, if you have a disabling injury that prevents you from returning to your permanent full-time job.

Payments begin after a seven-day waiting period and they continue for as long as you can’t go back to work due to your auto accident injury.

What if I am a temporary or part-time worker?

You will receive 90 per cent of your net income, up to a maximum amount, for the first 180 days after an accident that prevents you from working. Note that if your injuries prevent you from working after 180 days, you will get IRI based on the employment that you were capable of doing right before your injury, as if you had been employed full-time.

For other employment and non-employment situations involving IRI, check with your Wyatt Dowling insurance expert.

IRI is part of Manitoba Public Insurance (Autopac)

Income Replacement Indemnity is part of the Manitoba Public Insurance’s Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP) benefits.

All residents of Manitoba who are hurt in auto accidents in Canada or the United States and can’t go back to work due to disabling injuries are entitled to PIPP benefits.

What is an Income Replacement Indemnity (IRI) Extension?

It’s optional coverage that is an extension to your IRI. You should consider an IRI Extension if you will earn more than $108,000 in 2022 and you don’t have disability insurance through your employer, or any other type of disability insurance. (The maximum was $103,500 in 2021.)

With IRI Extension coverage, you would get 90% of your net income if you have a disabling injury from the auto accident you were in. The seven-day waiting period still applies.

What are other benefits from an IRI Extension?

Fatality payments: IRI Extension coverage will mean higher payments to your spouse or common-law partner, or to your dependents if you're a single parent, if you are killed in a motor vehicle accident. The payments are calculated using your extended IRI coverage, rather than PIPP's limit.

Retirement Income Benefit: If you qualify for a Retirement Income Benefit, your payments may be greater because the calculation uses your extended IRI coverage rather than PIPP's limit.

How do I get IRI Extension coverage?

You can get IRI Extension coverage by contacting your Wyatt Dowling insurance expert.

You can buy it in increments of $10,000. The cost is $20 per increment, with a minimum policy premium of $50. You can buy up to $200,000 over the PIPP limit.

But you need to remember: Your income replacement is still based on actual income you've lost. Speak to your Wyatt Dowling insurance expert about it.

I doubt this will do anything. but I am absolutely furious. I stood outside and respected their rules, that if there are to many people the doors will remain locked. I stood outside and waited patiently. A costumer walked out but the door shut and locked immediately. I figured they were still at max capacity. 25minutes go by and an finally employee opens the door and says sorry we're closed now (it was now 6pm sharp) I replied i waited here for 25 minutes and no one could come outside to inform me that I wouldn't be able to get help tonight? so I didn't have to waste my time freezing outside. she replied thats not my fault. we were too busy and shut the door. she was utterly rude and disrespectful.

My elderly mother has had issues with this company for a few weeks. After asking to change her payment date they ignored her and then gave her the run around. She is on a fixed income and can't afford to make payments in the middle of the month. They basically told her too bad.

I use Wyatt on McPhillips for everything. I had no issues except for the last 2 years. I went on maternity leave and changed my vehicle to pleasure and kept my husbands the same, or so I thought. The girl I dealt with changed both of them to pleasure (I never look at the paperwork - my bad and now I do 100% of the time). My husband got into an accident on his way to work. Made the claim and that’s when we found out that the vehicle was on pleasure. Our claim was denied. We had to be investigated and go to several meetings. Luckily the history of this vehicle was always on all purpose that our adjuster after several days of pleading our case and trying to get this resolved (we had 3 meetings on 3 different days). Wyatt was informed immediately of this error and did absolutely nothing to assist us. It was my fault anyway bc I didn’t read the paperwork. They said they circle where it says pleasure and all purpose. Thankfully I file all that and nope it was circled. MPI allowed us to pay the difference and approved our claim. This entire process took 6 months so we were our a vehicle for that time period. This is the major issue I’ve had. I don’t know why after the above issue I still continued to give them my business. Bc I know better now I’ve caught them by accident changing my insurance again to pleasure. Never mind the crazy long waits they are not professional at all. I will NEVER go to them again and I will make sure. Can sway anyone who uses them to not use them anymore

I was happy and always like to arrange my car insurances in this location until last week when I came in and the lady at the front sitting at the right, by the wall (not by the aisle, with a blonde hair maybe in her 50's) was kinda' cold to customer and maybe not in a good mood that day and gave me an attitude. I'm usually soft spoken but I didn't had any problems with other listeners. She asked me to louder my voice because she can't hear me but the way she said it with a bad tone and with other people around us looking at me and I was so embarrased. Then, I just realized she didn't even greeted when I came into the office. But who knows, maybe I'm just not used to front desk staffs of this Wyatt Dowling location for not being friendly because I didn't get any issues like this in the past. And who knows maybe she had a long day and lucky for me I was the one who's been treated that way on that exact time. I'm never going back to this location and I'm sure letting my friends know (who's car enthusiasts as well) to not deal with her as much as possible. Otherwise just go to Reider Insurance by the Tim Hortons in same location. Anyhows, I think any front desk staffs should be always friendly to any kind of visitors going into the office no matter what time of the day.

I have been a customer of the Wyatt Dowling on McPhillips for a few years. I will no longer deal with them. I've waited days for call backs, on separate occasions my tenant insurance had me down for the wrong gender, had my home as a one story when it was two stories, and other errors. This is unacceptable. I went so far as to go to the office on Regent and was sent back to McPhillips. I no longer have any policies with Wyatt Dowling. And in the future will get my insurance through a different company.

We own several properties, we used them for house insurance, Wyatt Dowling is a Broker and a broker is SUPPOSED to look out for your best interest, well they dont, they also blatantly lied to us, saying there's a cancellation fee if we cancel out policy, but she said i dont know what the fee is until you cancel, upon reviewing our policy there is no fee, you just have to give a 15 day notice, on top of this she said you will not find a better rate, once we told her we already found a better rate, then she says oh thats possible. This behavior is unacceptable, DO NOT GET HOUSE INSURANCE FROM HERE, call CAA or call TD Bank, they charged us $3400 a year for what CAA covers for $1400 a year, again a broker is supposed to look out for your best interest. I wish i could give them a negative rating, definitely don't deserve the one star

OK for easy transactions (ie a quick drivers license payment) but I avoid this place in general now, especially for anything more complicated. The last few times I've visited I've been met with very slow service from everyone and one woman in particular is always rude and careless towards customers. I leave disappointed and too often have had to drive someplace else to get what I needed.
