J	Jane Petrovykh on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Their website says things like ‘Toronto Oasis is a community for all, including families with children’ and ‘Be accepting and be accepted.’ In reality, they are not kids-friendly. Their attitude towards families with children are not friendly or accepting, it’s not even tolerant. Families with kids are tolerated for as long as the kids are unnoticeable, and the burden of that is entirely on the parents. Their actual policy seems to be ‘kids should be seen but not heard’. My kid didn’t throw a tantrum, he wasn’t even very loud. He was simply behaving like a kid – running around, jumping, laughing. He wasn’t unsupervised; I was watching him and playing with him, while listening to the speaker. 20 minutes into the meeting, I was asked to leave the room and play with my kid someplace else. So much for kids friendliness, community and acceptance. When my husband raised it as concern at the end of the meeting, he was attacked with comments like ‘You should have known’ and ‘We had visitors with kids before and never had problems’. People who position themselves as reason-oriented used logical fallacies and victim-blaming instead of addressing the issue. If you don’t want kids at your meetings, it’s okay to say so. But it’s misleading to say ‘we’re a family-friendly community’ when in fact you are a closed exclusive childfree platform to promote invited speakers and musicians.
