About The Hexagon Board Game Cafe

The Hexagon Board Game Cafe started when owners Kellie Ho and Randy Wong graduated from architecture school in 2008 and struggled to find work in the design field. Many hours and late nights were devoted to playing The Settlers of Catan and that devotion continued when Kellie and Randy moved to South Korea.

They continued their late nights playing with friends from various international locales – from Australia and South Africa to the US, and the UK. It was there where they were first introduced to the concept of board game cafes. Board games, along with a great cup of tea or a glass of wine, became the common element that brought them and their global friends together. So upon their return to Canada, they wanted to bring that social experience back home. Four years later, in 2014, equipped with a personal collection of over 400 board games, Kellie and Randy opened the first Hexagon Cafe in Edmonton, Alberta.

Two years later, in 2016, Hexagon Cafe expanded to Calgary, Alberta.  With the continual rise of popularity in board games, they quickly outgrew their first location in Edmonton.  So in 2017, they packed up all the games and relocated 6 blocks down to their current – and bigger – location on Whyte Ave.

Very nice place for a date or to just hang out with a group of friends. This place has the largest selection of board and card games I've seen to date. The food and drinks are decently priced and taste good. Service is very friendly and the atmosphere is great.

Fantastic place for the board game player. Prices are really reasonable. Good selection of games. They have a cafe/coffee shop type menu. They don't try to force you into buying drinks or food whilst playing games. You can sit there with water easily.

Itโ€™s was beautiful experience! Lots of both old and new games to pick, menu was extremely enjoyable. We got the spinach dip and it was yummy! Also got the iced peach green tea lemonade, that was better than the Starbucks version! 10/10 would recommend for a girls night or date night for sure!

Good concept, AWFUL service. You have to pay by the hour, but then have to wait over an hour to get the food you order. We rarely saw our server, and even just when we asked for water it took 45 minutes for someone to come around with some. It also took an insane amount of time just to get a canned drink - someone at our table ordered food after another and got theirs first. The benches are super uncomfortable to be sitting on for an amount of time and the tables aren't great for some games - cards kept falling through the cracks. There are better places in the city that you get the same thing for a better experience.

Great space, solid game selection, reasonable rates, decent beverages. Only tried the Iced Mocha and London Fog, but they were good, and didn't rent any games but everything made sense regarding space/game rental. They also have a small but good selection of games for purchase as well, including core D&D materials (dice and main books). Do be patient, as staff might be explaining a game to other customers when you come in, but overall they're pretty prompt at greeting and checking in with you once you're in. ?

Went on an adventure with a friend and we saw the sign for Cookie Dough hot chocolate so we popped in and to our surprise it is a table top game Cafe. Spent at least an hour in and had a blast

You know when you find the perfect blend of ambience, activity, and soul-satisfying desserts and you just don't want to leave? That's how I felt at this cafe. I may as well have become a boardgame myself, especially if it meant I could stay there forever (exaggeration to be excused). All in all, it was a great experience with just the right kind of energy!
