Would make for quite a long day-hike if you only hiked. I mountain biked the first part of the trail where bikes are allowed, and then hiked from there. It made for a relatively fast descent. The trail is great until the valley above Chester Lake, but the scrambly ascent to the col from which you ascend the summit ridge of the Fortress is not quite as difficult as it appears, yet still quite taxing. Great hike overall! Be careful when you get to the summit block itself; if you don’t find the right crevice to ascend safely to the top, you might end up wandering a little close to an extremely precipitous drop on the front face of The Fortress.

We did the Fortress Trail loop, combining the summit of the Fortress. Went from the headwall lakes, climbed up the mountain and came back from the Chester Lake area. Stunning.

There are 2 approaches to summit Mt. Fortress via south col. Both routes start on the same Chester Lake parking lot at Hwy. 742. One way is to follow Chester Lake trail and start from north-west end of Chester Lake. Second option is to go via Headwall Valley. Both variants technically the same. The latter one few kilometers longer
