I knew The Drop in Centre in Guelph existed but I only learned more about it tonight at 100 Women Who Care. Gail did an excellent job at explaining how the donation was used and more about the work this charity does to alleviate poverty.

The women who just answered the phone refused me a bed because i checked out to go see my kids over the weekend in london. Leaving me to sleep on the street Since when does a emergency shelter reject people in need in emergency situations ? This is run by a church ? This is disgusting and unacceptable. I have to work at 6 am and no place but hallways and concrete as options now. There reason stated you checked out and ee dont accept people off the street unless they go through sign up process and thats the following day at 3 pm

Most of the staff are friendly, a few are quite the opposite. The worst part is how they 'deal' with addiction, or better how they avoid dealing with it. There are people literally dealing meth and fentanyl in plain site. Even in the main dinning area. Yet, most the staff is not trained to use narcane or naloxone. In fact, they don't even stock both even though they can get it for free. It makes me sick to my stomach thinking this is the only regular option for the impoverished that Guelph has to offer.

I knit on my free time and decided to donate a few of the scarves I have piling up in my house. When I brought them in, the guy who accepted them said "where's the rest of them" not even a thank you. I think I'll be personally delivering scarves to people now thank you very much

The concept of providing help to the needy is a good one. The food is fresh. unfortunately you have to sit with criminals, drug addicts, alcoholics and mentally ill. It's hard sometimes to have a meal unbothered. Every day is just a different degree of crazy. Whoever runs it now has lesser standards than did Sister Christine. Without its passionate founder many valuable services have been discontinued. There is an aged prostitute/con artist/thief there who unfortunately just the sight of kills your appetite. Even though you want to help everyone not everyone deserves your help. The person who stole more than $1000 from my friend {a handicapped senior, ) obviously does not need a free meal. As a person who works(part time) and does not get a free welfare check, it's hard to be treated condescendingly by the manager for being angry about sharing a meal with a known thief. Maybe criminal records should be considered. I don't have one.

Found myself unexpectedly homeless last year - something I never anticipated in my life. The workers here provided food, resources, clothing, and ultimately paid my first months rent that eventually lifted me out of my situation and allowed me to get my life back on track. They didn't judge me, or ask me for anything in return. I'll be grateful to them for the rest of my life. These are the most altruistic people I've ever met. They do a thankless, but extremely important job, only to have the city smugly look down on them for it. Make no mistake -- they make this community, province, and country a better place, even if you don't see it.

Too bad you have to give this place even one star to rate it. It deserves none. I volunteered here from 1993 to 1995 at its previous location on Wyndham St. Very little appreciation if any at the time I helped there. Not even anything for volunteer appreciation week. Not the best place to build a positive attitude. Wouldn't even try volunteering again at its current location. I am adding a few new things to my comment but when it comes to homelessness there IS a choice to get help but if that person doesn't want it I am NOT going to help. Put correctly you can't help those who don't want it. Many choose to be homeless although I could never understand why. I see some of the people that used to use the Drop in Centre 25 years ago go into Hope House when I am downtown...........sorry somethings wrong there. A place like this is supposed to be a temporary solution until one gets back on their feet............25 years is NOT temporary. Anyways I have moved on to much more positive things in my life since then, You want something to feel good about this would not be the place for it but to each is own I guess!!!
