About Synaptic Spinal Cord Injury and Neuro Rehabilitation Centre

I spent most of my professional career as a physiotherapist working with elite athletes to prevent and fix injuries and improve their performance – better, stronger, faster was always the focus. I didn’t realize the extent and true meaning of those words, until I met a client who was in a wheelchair and needed support from her community.

It was this client’s journey that inspired change and was the impetus for the origins of Synaptic. Like so many of us do each day, she got into her car one morning to drive her kids to school but unfortunately lost control of her vehicle. In that split movement her life and that of her family’s was changed. She went from running and playing hockey multiple times a week and managing the family businesses, to being unable to care for herself due to a spinal cord injury. However, through this life changing accident, she was determined to put everything into her recovery. She quickly discovered that there were limited opportunities for ongoing rehab in Calgary, Alberta and even Canada, and made the decision to seek care in the United States, which was not without significant personal and financial sacrifice.

She approached our team of practitioners and asked if we could help. Not a single person on our team at the time had any specific neuro experience but refusing to help her was not an option. And so, it began. We engaged in professional development courses to learn more about rehab. We approached potential donors to raise capital funds. We picked out tiles for the bathrooms in what would become our newly accessible space. An unrelenting shared commitment spurred us on as a team who wanted to impact change for those in the neuro community. Our mission was simple. We wanted to make things better. We wanted to educate, enable, and empower people to live their best lives. We wanted to provide them with the space, treatment options and opportunity to try.

From our origins, Synaptic continues to evolve and I could not be prouder to be a part of something that fundamentally changes lives for the better. Our goals are still the same; we are here to work alongside our clients to be better, stronger, faster, so that they can hug their loved ones again, play with their kids, go back to school, return to work, or get dressed independently in the morning. Their individual goals are our goals.

Synaptic continues to give our community a platform to seek and advocate for change. Our story is a culmination of human kindness, mixed with community generosity, sprinkled with unwavering hope. We want to always be a beacon of resilience, determination, and strength for our clients. I hold deep gratitude to be part of this story and it is with honour that I will continue to steward this journey.

Sincerely,

Overheard physical therapists talking about a patient they have there by name, in a public area, in a negative way. I know this person they spoke of as a friendly acquaintance. So inappropriate for healthcare. What happened to confidentiality training?

I have been seeing Uyen for over 10 years for various sports injuries and can confidently say she is the best physiotherapist I have ever met. She takes the time with her clients and treats through manual manipulation, acupuncture, and cupping. I always feel so much better afterward. I am inspired by the work she does with spinal chord injuries, and would highly recommend this clinic for all situations.

I highly recommend Synaptic to anyone looking to heal an injury, improve mobility, look after your longterm health. I have been going there for a few years now and the staff are very professional, friendly and knowledgeable. I was able to completely recover from an Achilles rupture with their help. I always suggest this clinic to my friends and family.

We have been so impressed with Synaptic, their staff, equipment and overall experience! Our Father suffered a Spinal cord injury almost 2 years ago and this has really been the place to lift his spirits and push him beyond his limits. They have incredible staff that care about your progress, that challenge you and help you get to your goal whatever that may be. Their equipment is state of the art that you will not find anywhere else, and the facility is large and located in a prime location. We are so grateful for finding this place! It has really made a world of a difference for our Father. It has become our second home. We have also seen firsthand the incredible progress others have undergo, including cases of people learning to walk, when it seemed all hope was gone. Miracles do happen, and Synaptic has become a large contributor of them!

Less than year ago I broke my C1 and C7 in a snowboarding accident. After attending the seven sessions covered by AHS, at one of the larger physiotherapy companies in Calgary, I was still stiff as a board and weak as a kitten. Doing the same exercises as people with shoulder injuries didn't get me very far. I started going to Synaptic (physiotherapy with Uyen and massage with Gordon) and my recovery skyrocketed. After a couple of sessions and doing the exercises provided, that were tailored to my needs, it was noticeable that I was on the right track. My goals were to be able to do the same physical work as I used too, before my accident and to have better posture. Within five months, I was discharged and my core strength has never been better! The staff is very friendly, extremely knowledgable, and is focused on making you better, not seeing how many clients they manage at one time. I can't thank them enough for what they've done for me.
