About Surex Insurance
Lance Miller and Matt Alston struck up a friendship as fellow business owners from Magrath, a small town in Southern Alberta. Miller owned a bricks and mortar insurance brokerage and Alston owned a direct marketing company when one day, Miller asked Alston if he would be interested in buying Miller’s father’s insurance brokerage in nearby Raymond, Alberta. In 2005, Miller risked everything to purchase the brokerage in Magrath. The Banking Act was being restructured, and major financial institutions were looking to get into the insurance industry. Miller and Alston wondered why consumers would want to purchase insurance from banks, and surmised that it was because the massive organizations had the tools and resources to provide a good customer experience. They sought to do better by providing an exceptional experience to their customers, as well as other stakeholders.
While the initial plan was to expand the business by acquiring other brick and mortar brokerages, they soon saw the tremendous opportunity to become an online insurance provider, which would allow them to scale the company while still running the business from Magrath. Surex launched its beta site in 2012. The company has been bootstrapped by Miller and Alston, and in the early years, the pair reinvested profit back into the company.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Absolutely the best insurance price and wonderful customer service. Everywhere else, I was considered a "high-risk" client. However, Surex was the only one to that didn't see me as such. Candice was able to help me find a full coverage policy over $300 cheaper than everywhere else. She was able to insure me the same day, and emailed me all of my paperwork within minutes. Within an hour, I was given a quote, got insured and had all of my necessary paperwork sent to me.

A completely low end scheme to keep you from canceling your policy.
Poor broker experience.non transparent or accountable for there errors .

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Seems great at first but make sure you know what coverage you need and what your rights are. Don't trust the advisers to do their job because they won't.
Been a customer for 9 years and my adviser changed 3 times over the last 2 years, not once was I reached out to regarding my coverage and making sure it still suited our needs still. I advised my (original) adviser in March 2020 that my boyfriend and I were living together and trying to combine insurance and I was only told in July 2020 when the first adviser switch over happened that we couldn't have policies together because we weren't common law yet. (3 years in AB or 1 year with a child, yet we are common law with the military after 6 months and 1 year federally)
Fast forward to an issue with a claim we are going through and he has never been covered! They didn't list him as an additional adult in the household. I asked why we should be punished for something an adviser/underwriter didn't correct and do 2 years ago!! The information was forwarded to a supervisor and I've been waiting over 3 weeks for that follow up. So glad my renewal date is coming up so I can cancel -- this company doesn't care about making sure their customers are taken care of in the long run.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I used to be a customer of Surex, but left 2 years ago due to terrible service and atrocious rates. My partner recently purchased a new vehicle so took another chance and called back for quotes…….It was laughable. Almost $10k for a year. Lol. We ended up finding another provider and got even better coverage for a 1/4 of the price. Yikes
I guess since Surex is in the business of arguing with customers on Google Reviews which answers a lot of questions; I’ll add this. The coverage IS the same. The same situation stood when I cancelled in the past. I switched companies and a new broker found me better rates (same coverage) with a better insurance company (Intact FYI). So I am not sure why you argue that the coverage is not the same. It is. Above that, if people DO enjoy the prices your colleagues find, good for them - still, the service is sub par. ??
