My kids like this store as they carry some albums that are hard to find anywhere else. Some of their merchandise is also unique.

Sad that music stores have become so rare. These folks are obviously doing their best to stay relevant, and it shows. We love stopping in here to find music, games, and unique branded merch.

Great to see a company still believes in music that you can hold. Superb selection of LP’s, CD’s, videos, games and pop-culture related trinkets. Friendly service and many limited edition items. Great store.

Having bought 99.9% of my music, movies, and such at record stores for many decades, I like to think I know a little about what makes for a great experience there. Selection, friendly/informed/attentive staff, mixed media, even air conditioning all influence the in-store experience (more than a few dozen times while living in Japan did I impulse-buy music and movies while merely basking in the icy air of a Tsutaya "culture convenience" store on a boiling summer evening!). The vast selection at the old HMV in downtown Toronto, the amazing array of rarities at the old Sam The Record Man on Yonge Street, the selection at the Tsutaya in the city of Amagasaki... a record store should stand out, even if it be ever so humble. That is the SUNRISE Records store at the Mall, Medicine Hat's own one stop culture convenience zone. Though in the past the traditional record store mostly focused on cassettes, CDs, and actual records, the modern "record" store must also cater to all the subsidiary materials of television and movies: box sets, T-shirts, games, collectible figures, and so on. So it is no small task for a small town record store to set up such an expansive array in such a small space. That alone deserves at least a couple of stars. Come to SUNRISE for a classic vinyl LP recording, and you will leave with three LPs, a CD, a very reasonably priced rock T-shirt, and a $7.99 classic movie. SUNRISE makes reasonable promises and overdelivers, to the great benefit of the customer. That positive too earns it another couple of stars. Finally, any record stores of note (the ones we remember fondly) were staffed by people we came to know and like: the nerdy movie nut who recommended Japanese art films, the punk rocker girl who somehow knew more about Beethoven than your band teacher, these were the denizens of the long lost record stores actually worth remembering. As such, SUNRISE in Medicine Hat is managed by ex-footballer Brett, who you can always rely on to point you towards the right end of the cinema aisle. His knowledge of movies (and the sight of his miraculously long ponytail-beard) are worth the trip into the store alone. Need to keep updated on the newest, coolest thing coming out of East Asia? Purple haired Jess will get you up to speed pronto. Need to run in and grab something fast before heading off somewhere else? Alisha will have you rung through and ready to go before you barely have your wallet out. Selection, knowledge, and service, as good or better than any large store around, delivered by the kind of people that excel at running a record store, people who SHOULD be running a record store. Of course you can always go on Amazon and order whatever you want and it will arrive in ten seconds... but you will be missing out on everything that makes the communal side of buying music a delight. No browsing and taking chances on what you see, no chatting with Jess about Japanese usagi (adorable bunny) culture, no 1960s B-movie recommendations, no feeling the LPs flipping through your fingers as you dig through Miles Davis reissues, no delightful surprises, no interesting discoveries, and none of the other things that make buying music fun. Record stores are vital places, and superior to delivery services that make music take on the same social relevance as the dish soap and coat hangers ordered along with it, nothing special. Go to SUNRISE to buy your music. It is a great thing to do.

I went there to buy Cannibal Corpse' new album, Violence Unimagined. They had it in stock and then I couldn't help myself and bought another 180 bucks worth of CD's. Gotta support the artists, otherwise they won't be able to keep making the music we love

What you would expect from a Sunrise Records, with a little more HMV sprinkled in than usual. Love the store display; it really stands out in the mall. They had a great sanitizer and cleaning station set up at the entrance, and even though it’s a record store, it felt safe. I would recommend this Sunrise Records, and look forward to visiting again.
