About Southern Alberta Brain Injury Society (SABIS)

With a passion for improvement and community building, Shane Rempel has worked diligently to improve the community around him; a community that is near and dear to him, having been born and raised here in Calgary, Alberta.

Having been personally impacted by the negative effects of brain injury, Shane has been an ardent advocate for greater awareness and supports for those affected by brain injuries. For over a decade, Shane has run a program in Calgary to create awareness, promote prevention of brain injuries, and encourage helmet use. Through this program, Shane is proud to have overseen the distribution of over 500 bike helmets in the City of Calgary.

Shane also has an extensive history in other areas of social services, working most recently on solving the complex issue of youth homelessness, which is also something very close to his heart.

Shane’s values are authenticity, trust, kindness, curiosity, and a growth mindset. As it relates to his role at SABIS, Shane says, “leading with curiosity is kind. And authentic curiosity fosters a growth mindset, all of which leads you to space of continuous learning, not in the academic sense, but in a more holistic way – learning about people and learning about new ways to improve your surroundings. I like to take an approach of ‘what happened to you?’ rather than ‘what’s wrong with you?’, which I think is the difference between being human-centered and curious vs. judgmental and critical”

When not collaborating or advocating, Shane likes to spend his time in the kitchen creating new recipes, or out in the woods, finding peace in the serenity of the great outdoors. He also enjoys the company of friends and family, and of course his cat, Blondie.

Sabis refused me because my brain injury took place when I was an infant and I've been living with a damaged brain my whole life. I'm an adult survivor of SBS and my whole life has been a struggle. I can't look after myself properly because I have severe difficulties with executive functioning as a result of my head trauma as a baby, and I can't get help for it from anywhere, because it didn't happen recently. I didn't get any help earlier in life because due to my intelligence and the fact that I'm so well spoken, the problem kept being missed and professionals assumed for a long time that I'm just lazy or not trying hard enough. But we've finally figured out that there is something wrong with my brain, and yet, I can't get any help for it, or assistance at home with everyday tasks. So I'm stuck living in filth and being unable to properly carry out tasks that normal people do every day and take for granted. It's unfair.. and to be honest, I would have thought that Sabis of all places, would help me. Go to them if you have a recent brain injury, but if it happened when you were an infant, forget it. They won't help you.

A great place to help anyone regarding a brain injury! I live for Wednesday mornings indeed. SABIS helps those with any type of brain work on good recovery programs. After being accepted, they help tailor a great program aimed at recovery ASAP. My brain injury was due to excessive booze, and they helped for a great recovery plan. Booze can kill portions of your brain permanently, but through tough very hard work neuroplasticity takes place. This helps undisturbed parts assist injured bran portions to at least partly recovery and carry on. They helped save my life!! WOW!! Family kissed me goodbye and headed back east (Maritimes). SABIS is in there long term and God nows they have helped immensely indeed! I'm sure that without the programs from them, I would lkely be 6 feet (or deeper!) under by now! God Bless SABIS from TFW
