About Sobeys Liquor Newcastle

A proudly Canadian company with more than 110 years in the food business, Sobeys Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Empire Company Limited, headquartered in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. The Sobeys name is synonymous with quality and passion. Now we’ve brought it to liquor stores across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Here’s how: in 1993, the Alberta Provincial Government announced the privatization of the liquor retail industry. Capitalizing on this important change, we launched Western Cellars, which opened its first location in Spruce Grove in November 1995. In 2014 Sobeys Liquor acquired Safeway Wine & Spirits. Since then, we’ve grown steadily to over 100 locations across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

Was not at the liquor store .I was at the store next to it across the road. It is a new place that has everything from birthday cards to everything that you can use in your life.

Great prices on wine, and great selection in Scotch and they generally have a good sale or two on scotch that they rotate. This place is my go-to local liquor store. Friendly staff too!

My mom and I went to this location tonight to get some alcohol, however I had left my ID at home (I am well over the age of majority but still young enough to be ID'd often). I knew going in that I would not be allowed to purchase the alcohol but figured that since my mom was with me it would be fine. My mom also has a bit of a physical disability so she could not carry or grab the alcohol herself, so I did both for her. We got to the till and I placed the bottles on the counter. The cashier asked for my ID and I explained that I did not have it but that my mom was paying anyway. She told us she would not sell to us since I had touched the bottles. We explained that my mom couldn't carry them herself and that I was just helping -- again, not actually purchasing. She said that she would let us purchase this time only, next time I would have to have my ID. Forward to the end of the transaction. She had placed our alcohol in bags. I asked if I would be allowed to carry them out for my mom or if she was going to call the police on me for doing so despite her previous warnings, seeing as its in a bag now and I wouldn't be actually touching the bottles. She snapped at me, "I can't answer that. SHE (pointing at my mom) has to be the one to carry them." So my mom grabbed the bag and struggled to hobble out of the store to our car. Meanwhile (having worked cashier jobs myself I know how it feels and tried to leave on a neutral foot), I turned to the cashier and told her exactly, "I'm not mad at you, I get it. I'm just asking a question." She turned away from me and said in the most snootiest of voices "whatever". I have NEVER heard of being unable to touch the bottles, never mind help a physically disabled individual to do a physical task being against the rules. I can understand that liquor laws are important, etc and keeping it away from minors and all that, but the treatment and rudeness was uncalled for. I felt that simply submitting this to the Sobey's comments form would allow it to get buried, hopefully posting this here on Google with inform others of the discrimination my mom (and by extension me as family and caregiver) faced.

One Friday night we went in the store laughing and having a good time because we were going out to a party and we were told that we weren’t allowed to be served because we were drinking and we didn’t drink anything we were just laughing Then a few weeks later We went to the store twice once before supper then once after supper because we forgot something and we were rudely told that this will be the last time we were allowed to come in the store because the policy says we are not allowed to come more than twice We were not rude people. we are not mean people are very nice and we are in our 40s We hate to complain about anything to anyone but this has to be addressed It was the dark-haired girl with the black earrings I’m pretty sure she had glasses on and she always works to till So rude

Bought a few bottles and gift bags for Christmas gifts and the Woman who checked me out grabbed tissue paper and wrapped them up all nice for me and got them ready to gift. Amazing service. Tons of selection and great sales.
