About Sobeys Liquor Cathedral

A proudly Canadian company with more than 110 years in the food business, Sobeys Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Empire Company Limited, headquartered in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. The Sobeys name is synonymous with quality and passion. Now we’ve brought it to liquor stores across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Here’s how: in 1993, the Alberta Provincial Government announced the privatization of the liquor retail industry. Capitalizing on this important change, we launched Western Cellars, which opened its first location in Spruce Grove in November 1995. In 2014 Sobeys Liquor acquired Safeway Wine & Spirits. Since then, we’ve grown steadily to over 100 locations across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

I have taken my dog to Sobeys at the Rochdale location with no problems. They are dog friendly and staff is very friendly at the Rochdale location but not at 13th Avenue...maybe the rude manager doesn't like dogs and maybe he should train the employees better. Last time I was there employees were petting my dog and no mention dogs were not allowed. Lost my BUSINESS on 13th Avenue at least have a place to chain up dogs so someone can steal your dog. Not a safe area to be leaving your dog alone or unattended. Oh and who puts Hungarian wine with African wine...took me forever to find it.

It's a smaller store that doesn't quite have the selection of the bigger one's and not much parking.

Not necessarily the store I would have picked for that corner - but it's a less obtrusive store than I feared and the inside is bright and clean, well stocked, big refrigerated section and friendly staff. Also nice that it has a small parking lot.

Very friendly staff, decent selection, great rotating discounts. Bough a broken bottle, and they were kind enough to replace.

*Update after 1 year near bottom of this review* Big Bonus Star!!! Amazing Air Miles deals are able to be collected here if you keep your eye open, for quality drink too! Just snagged a bonus 20 miles for a 66 of Crown Royal, on sale for about 10 or 12 dollars off. It is a gross infringement of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms to require vaccine proof to enter a liquor store. Corrupt beyond belief. Fight for your rights. Regardless, this is the best liquor store in the city. In it's immediate area it has the best prices, best selection, and best sales/deals. The staff are helpful, friendly and personable. The variety is something awesome here, with bottom to top shelf liquor of all varieties. Sake? Check. Whisky (scotch, rye, Irish and bourbon)? Check. Rum? Lots of it and lots of good stuff. Gin? Yep. Tequila on deck. You name it, you'll find it here. They have Texas Mickey sized bottles, too. The beer selection is incredible, featuring an entire cold room dedicated to storing imports and domestic beers and coolers, fruity drinks and that good stuff. And lastly, you can collect Air Miles here. Which is pretty kick a*s, cause if you like to drink and you do all your shopping here, you'll be earning cash back or a vacation pretty quickly! *UPDATE* The Sobeys Liquor in the Cathedral Village remains my most frequented liquor store citywide by a large margin. There hasn't been 1 slip in quality of service or products offered. The staff are always helpful and friendly, don't breathe down your neck and they're all attractive too, so bonus points there. They also maintain a clean place of business, inside and out; clean floors and organized shelves, no rubbies outside asking for change and the parking lot looks pristine. 10/10 would enter.

Ok, it is a standard sobey's liquor for the most part in that there's a massive cooler section and also loads of craft beer. The staff here is also really good. However, if you can make the trip, my preference is the south end location. Parking is better but so is the layout of the store. I can always find what I am looking for at that location, and I can find it easily. Whereas at this downtown one I often can't find what I'm looking for or they don't have it anymore. This wasn't just during the liquor shortage. So I use this location as a quick and easy stop when I just want cream liqueur or something very obvious, but when I'm treating my partner to fancy coolers etc I go south.
