My experience with the Tribunal here converted me...to someone deeply sceptical of the Church's authority structure. For most of my life, I'd wanted to convert from Protestantism to Catholicism. I believe in the Catholic faith. But I didn't respect the Church hierarchy and the local tribunal enough to continue with the "investigation" process, necessary for me to proceed as a catechumen. The problem? My husband has two "priors"--civil marriages that ended with civil divorces. I could stand the not knowing, the lack of clarity, feeling jerked around, demands followed by more demands, and the lack of communication between the local parish and this archdiocese tribunal. I ignored my gut feelings; I overrode my moral objections to a "judiciary" system that IMO exists outside modern law, without due process, the right to counsel, discovery, statutes of limitation, a fair and speedy trial, and more. And consumer law protects us against "bait-and-switch" techniques and demands that a seller be upfront about pricing. Not until 2 months in was I informed there'd be a $1,000 deposit. Nobody hazarded a guess at the final cost, either. And, while at first assured "only the first marriage" of my husband would "count," there was far too much interest in the second marriage for me to believe that one. The deal breaker: IMO, the demands placed on my husband, a Jew, were inhumane, unrealistic...plus insensitive and at times blasphemous to his faith. My husband has medical conditions, and I decided that he was under too much stress. I aborted the process. Yes, the Catholics involved only referred to him by his first name. But to me, he's my husband, whom I swore to protect. Nor do I consider my husband a vile person who needs to "clean up" the sin-stain of his civil divorces by paying for what I call an indulgence. As perhaps the person still living who's most acquainted with the facts, I don't blame either him or his ex-wives for the divorces. The Church claims to represent Christ on Earth. Well, read the Gospels. Sure, Christ preached against divorce--to his followers. But John Chapter 4 shows how Jesus treated a divorced person--with compassion and understanding. For He understood that the woman at the well lived outside the Jewish system and was discarded at will by her ex-husbands. And He knew that as a woman she now had to cohabitate without marriage in order to have a semblance of security. Nor did Christ claim Earthly power--indeed, at every opportunity, He turned it down.

Attended a conference here recently. Was a beautiful venue! Great location in the heart of Vancouver. A bit hard to find the parking, but it is a pretty busy location after all. Looking forward to my next visit.
