It’s safe for people over 50 – as Hood’s example proves. Even for those who are not fanatically fit like he is.

“This is probably the best exercise you’ll ever do,” AARP blogger Barbara Hannah Grufferman wrote.

It helps your midsection without the strain of crunches. And it works more than just the abs, targeting the entire core, which wraps around us and stabilizes our bodies while doing everyday tasks. Stability and balance are essential for functional fitness.

When you’re in the plank position, you’re working just about every muscle in your body. The focus is on the core and abs. But you’re also using your legs, arms and back to stay in place.

We’re happy to show you in person, but here’s the basic idea. Start by lying face down on an exercise mat. Keep the elbows close to your sides, the palms facing down, and the fingers facing forward. Lift up, keep your body straight, and put your weight on your elbows and feet.

Engage those core muscles and hold on.

Aim for 30 seconds at first. Rest a minute. Try for three rounds of that to start, a few times a week. You’ll be amazed how fast you advance.

One of the most common variations is the side plank. It’s good for lateral hip movement, as well. Others include using a Bosu ball or bench, or starting on your knees. There are so many variations that we can find one for you no matter what your needs.

Party Like a Rock Star

 Extreme examples like Hood’s can motivate the rest of us who want to stay strong and fit enough to enjoy life on a daily basis – whether it involves a lot of sports or just carrying in the groceries.

He told CNN he plays Van Halen when he’s trying to power through a workout or set a new world record.

“When it gets tough, you know what I do? I turn that music up so loud, you’d think you’re at a rock concert. I always had a fantasy of being a rock star back in the ’80s,” Hood said. “And at least for those 8 hours, 15 minutes and 15 seconds, I was a rock star.”

I became a Proactive Fitness Member in February 2020 after participating in a 6 Week New Year’s Resolution Re-Boot Challenge. I enjoy the challenging workouts 3 times a week either in studio or via Zoom from the comfort of my own home. I like working with the talented trainers who offer just the right amount of motivation and encouragement to keeping you working hard. The functional movement of my shoulders and hips have improved significantly since I started and my core has never been stronger. Highly recommend giving Proactive Fitness a try!

I had been looking for a good exercise place. My sisters always boasted of their yoga instructors and instructions but I just couldn’t seem to get into yoga full time. I heard about Proactive and that it included more mature people. I attended one free session and I was hooked. After signing up for three times a week program I told my sisters, β€œ I have found MY yoga!” The owner is constantly trying to improve and update the most optimum programs designed for older and not so old people and to provide enthusiastic, capable, fun, caring trainers. The atmosphere is one of acceptance, camaraderie and inclusion. It is a great place and I am so happy and lucky to have found it!

May 2020 Thanks Shelley Turk and staff for an enjoyable 21 day challenge. Proactive Fitness has a excellent variety of classes and times which helps make exercising easier. I have seen results in a friend who has been a member of Saskatoon Proactive Fitness for a few years so I am looking forward to being part of your family of exercisers now and in the future. I can’t thank Shelley and the trainers enough for encouraging and supporting me through my fitness journey! It truly got me off the couch for the first time in a long time and helped me on my journey to better health! Proactive Fitness has been a life changer for myself and 5 friends from rural Saskatchewan. Shelley and her team were happy to accommodate our specific needs. They set us up with a session every 2 weeks, that we can then do from home. We have our own Facebook page for encouragement and questions. The team continues to assess our individual needs and help us meet our goals of health and strength. We are moving into our 3rd year of working with Shelley and the Proactive team and couldn’t be happier with the results

I met Shelley Turk over 5 years ago and started to train with her. When she started her own studio, I moved there with her; in fact, was one of her clients who helped paint walls in the new location! For me, Proactive Fitness has been a lifeline, through family loss, a knee replacement and now the pandemic. Not only am I stronger and more confident physically and mentally, I have had the blessing of making many new friends there. Shelley and her staff are remarkable in what they have done for functional-aging Saskatoon. I cannot say enough words of praise for the trainers who are knowledgeable, friendly and always, always so ready to provide advice and encouragement.

I have no hesitation about giving Shelley and her team at Proactive Fitness a very positive review. I joined the gym about a year and a half ago and have enjoyed working with all the trainers. They are very knowledgeable and able to adapt any of the exercises to the needs of their clients. -Knee, hip, back, shoulder issues - they can all be accommodated. The groups are small- 6- so we all receive attention and support. It is all about functional fitness and ageing well. When gyms shut down in March Shelly and her staff quickly made the shift to online training using zoom. We now have the option to participate in person at the gym or from our home on zoom. A great place!

Focused on delivering to middle age to old people- trainers here are specifically qualified with FAI (functional aging Institute) certification which greatly enhance their capability to create & conduct programs for the older age group. Very homely quaint space with clients that feel as family along with the trainers. come in to feel the difference
