Petland Westhills - Calgary

I went to the west hills location tonight with my 8 year old daughter who asked for a black goldfish for her birthday. I bought her a tank and food from this location prior to her birthday. Upon opening it I promised we would go the next day and she could pick out the fish. Upon arriving we picked out rocks and number of items for the tank before arriving at the fish area. The girl inside was busy for several minutes talking with a customer inside where the aquariums were, however once she finished talking to him (we were there at 5:15 on a Thursday) she said sorry this is closed. I informed her it was disappointing because I brought my daughter to pick out a goldfish for her birthday. The young girl (red hair about 16-20) seeming annoyed quickly asked, ‘ what size is your aquarium’ I pointed a near by one that looked like the one I bought. The girl hardly looked around the corner (I’m not sure she even looked at the tank) and replied that’s too small. A goldfish requires 22 gallons. You can only get a beta. I could find someone else to help you. I walked away and asked a boy at the front till to call someone. When I came back to the aquariums the girl said to me so you are getting a beta. I said no. We are not. I said my daughter is getting a black goldfish ( I later read its 10 gallons per fish in a tank not 22) the girl replied well we won’t sell it to you then. The girl did not go get anyone to come speak to me, but I did speak to another staff whom recommend I come back at another time as they often close the fish tanks off in the evening. This isn’t mentioned on the website and I would suggest it is. I would also suggest the management hold this staff accountable to how rude she was to a customer who bought a fish tank, food and proceeded to buy items. I have however decided not to come back to this location to purchase the fish due this experience and as someone who was a regular patron, I won’t be coming back or purchasing from this store either.

Luna in the aquarium section was incredibly helpful. They were very educated on the fish, and which ones can pair with the tank/fish I already have at home. I visited twice and each time she gave me a lot of information, and was generous with her time showing me what would make my fish happy! As a beginner to owning a tank, she gave me more confidence in making sure I take good care of my fish.

I just got home with my new boy Angel! I had awesome service when chosing my new little guy. The girl that helped me (Dasha) was very informative and polite and caring! The adoption process was pretty simple to. I have had parakeets for many years now but it was nice that I got the coupon on my receipt to watch free "care information" videos. I was also informed of any issues that may come up Petland would be more than happy to resolve my issue. I honestly don't expect any as the birds all looked healthy and the entire store was quite clean! I will be going back when I need food toys etc because of my experience today. I like this store. The live animal habitats were well kept. Birds, rabbits and hamsters. Fish aquariums had nice selection and clean. The staff are pleasant and knowledgeable.

Love this store! Staff is always helpful when I need help... whether it's with a product or information or even if I need a hand taking things to my truck. Store is always well stocked and carries everything and more that I need for my hound.. definitely recommend this location.

I'm not going to lie and say that I buy a lot here, I've only bought a toy for a friend's pet here once. I don't even have any pets right now. I'm one of those deadbeats who takes my kid here so she can look at the animals for free. Despite this, the staff has been very friendly, offering to take out animals for us to touch even though we have never asked. So thank you for providing a refuge during COVID and having great staff! When we do eventually get a pet we will certainly buy stuff here.

Closes at either 6/7pm daily so forget about running to this store if you do your errands in the evenings. Often out of my dog’s brand/ flavour of food. Food loyalty program is good. Recently renovated store aisles and checkouts - much better layout. Staff are usually pleasant and used to help out with your large food bags - but haven’t seen that in a long time. I’d give more stars if they were open until 9pm M-F.

Clean, organized, and all the pets are well taken care of. I've always been happy with the state of this store and the care put into all the animals.They recently renovated their aquariums and I'm very pleased with the changes. It's certainly more expensive than local pet shops, but that's a given with chain pet stores. I'll definitely continue shopping here when I can't make it across town to the local stores.
