Do yourself a huge favor and book a trip with this company! Ive done 2 week long ski hut trips with Daniel Morton as the lead guide: last January 2019 at the Valkyr Hut, with his wife Mary on site as chef (SUPERB!) and this January 2020 at the Outpost Hut (Mary prepped all the food but did not attend - Dan prepared and served), both in the Valkyr Range of British Columbia. During January, the Kooteneys, of which the Valkyrs are a part, offer some of the best backcountry powder skiing in the world, so I needn’t go on about that. I’ve already booked with Dan at the Powder Creek Lodge for 2021, and will soon book a trip with him for 2022. Avalanche hazard was high due to continuous storms during our week at the Outpost. Despite this, Dan’s choice of terrain and continual expert assessment of risk not only kept our group safe, but resulted in the best week of powder skiing of my life. He’s also a really nice guy with a solid sense of humor and great with clients, particular those less experienced with these kinds of trips. Aside from the skiing, Dan prepared and served excellent breakfasts, a buffet make-your-own trail lunch, appetizers, dinner, and dessert. Wonderful, healthy recipes like duck confit with wild rice, squash purΓ©e and spinach salad made with many local ingredients, including many from Dan’s own organic garden. So good!

Lead Guide Dan Morton possesses all the hard skills one can expect a ski guide to have with the additional bonus of being a splitboarder so can really see and nail playful terrain. But "hard" skills is a basic requirement one would expect from the rigorous training required for the coveted ACMG badge. What Dan also brings to the table is a tableau of soft skills. Boy can he read a room .... or a skin track. When conditions dictate, when the group is ripe he designed programmes to let us slay steep and deep. And when conditions don't permit, he kept us out of harms way. You could do a lot worse than to join any trip curated by Dan. Last but not least Dan's team was outstanding. Amelie Goulet-Boucher is also superbly competent and always there to have your back. Marylene Savage is a superlative chef. Her creations taste great and have undescribable flair; with a taste for the aesthetic one cannot put into words.
