Report on operations to the end of 2021

2021 was a strangely quiet year. I do not know if it was the fall out from Covid-19 and things returning to near normal conditions, or if it is just a return to normalcy in the recycling world after several years of turmoil.

I have been a municipal rep on the NCSWMC board from its inception, in fact I was part of the formation committee. From the beginning every year has had some sort of challenge. Be it a fire, a new scale, repairing damaged doors or fencing, fixing the bale discharge chute or one of many other problems. If it was not working with our physical assets, it was dealing with provincial regulations or one of the many changes in the recycling world.

In 2021, we worked with Multi Material Stewardship Western (MMSW) to get the seasonal household survey completed. The provincial government has started discussions towards a fully integrated EPR (Extended Producer Reasonability) program for our recycled paper and plastics.

We also worked with the District of Lakeland and Elkridge to separate their membership into two entities.

Thank you to all Board members for their support and for promoting recycling throughout our region.

When NCSWMC was formed and funding was received to build our MRF, our engineers designed the building to handle a max flow of 4,000 tons of material. This year when reviewing the reports from our operations contractor we realized we were not including the ICI commercial tons in our calculations for total volume in the MRF. When we recalculated the figures we found the max flow through our facility was in 2016 at 7,179 metric tonnes.
