Smallmouth Bass Fishing: Murray Lake has a rocky Canadian Shield stucture and the perfect habitat for Smallmouth Bass to proliferate in great numbers and get big. Smallmouth Bass are found all along the shore and off rocky structure and points. Guests many times report catching over 60 hard fighting Smallies in an afternoon with some big ones. Smallmouth Bass in the 1 to 3-pound mark are common. Those who specifically target the Bronzbacks can get rewarded with not only large Smallmouth Bass but trophy size. There are plenty of Smallmouth Bass in the 4 to 6-pound range that get caught with the occasional 7-pounder. The Walleye in our area also hit the bass lures and Senko Worms.

Brook Trout & Lake Trout Fishing: We have several remote backcountry lakes that have outstanding Lake Trout and Brook Trout fishing. We have three small Lake Trout lakes where guests can expect to catch 10 to 20 Trout in an afternoon with the sizes averaging around 2.5 pound, which is the best eating size for Trout. We have stocked spring-fed Brook Trout Lakes near by where guests can spend the afternoon leisurely canoeing or kayaking and catch Brook Trout in the 1/3 to 2.5 pound range. These lakes have produced Brook Trout as big as 7 pounds but that is a rare monster-size Brookie. There are also a few cold streams in the area that produce lots of Brook Trout in the 9 to 12-inch range with the occasional 15 or 16 incher.

We had a 3 man group that used this outfitter in 2013 for a fall bear hunt. 2 members of our group, myself included, did not see any bear in 7 days of hunting and we hunted every day. We used excellent scent control and we were very vigilant about keeping ourselves and our clothes as scent free as possible. There were 8 hunters in camp and only 3 bears were taken. One bear was over 200lbs and the other 2 were under 175lbs. The ladder stands that were used were very uncomfortable for 8+ hours on stand every day. The outfitter only had one trail camera so the baits were not monitored to see what was coming into the bait sites and there was no computer at camp to check the memory cards. The success rate was far from 90% for our trip and the sighting rate was definitely not 100%. I cannot comment on the fishing because the only lake we had access to on our bear hunt was a brook trout lake.

The owners are nice, however the place is run down and there are some safety issues (missing dock board, rotting deck stairs ext.). The website is misleading as there is no games room, the WiFi is only at the picnic table by the fish cleaning hut and only during certain times of the day. The whole place is on solar so there is no "plug in" except for a phone in the cabin. There is also no T.V. in the cabin. There were no birds around the area we drove 45min away to hunt. Travelers should also no there is no cell reception. We went in the fall and caught one fish all week.

We have been going to Murray Lake for the last 6 years. Tina and Jeff have been very helpful and kind. We enjoy the peace and quiet of being in the wilderness. Fishing has always been fantastic. We love it there.

Our group has had an annual trip to this area for several years now and decided to try a different spot and we chose Murray Lake Cottages. This was the best decision we every made... the difference in quality of not only the facility but the folks who run it, Jeff and Tina. They went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our time on the water. We were a bit concerned being the first time on a new lake about the fishing but we were pleasantly surprised with not only great Walleye and Pike but the Small Mouth fishing unbelievable!!! We towed our own boat from the Indy area and also rented on site. I would suggest bringing some dry ice if you plan on bringing home lots of fish as the freezers are propane and are adequate for 2 or 3 people but more than that would be a challenge. The cooking facilities were more than adequate and we have already made our plans to return again.

Murray Lake Cottage is the place to go if your looking for great fishing or hunting opportunities. It is a remote camp that offers all the amenities you need to enjoy. Bear hunt was fantastic and well guided by Jeff. Fishing was also good on the numerous shoals for walleye, and all over the lake for Bass. Peaceful location and excellent guests Tina and Jeff, I would recommend to anyone. My father-in-law and I enjoyed ourselves immensely. Thank you.

We had a group of 4 stay in cabin 4 for bear hunting and some fishing. The cottages are located in a very remote and peaceful setting. Although weather put a damper on a few days of our stay, we were happy with our visit. Tina and Jeff are good people. Our bear hunt was unsuccessful for one hunter but another hunter in our group got one in the second day. He and another person in camp were the only two to even see bear beyond what was on our trail cameras at night. We also had a wolf on camera. I believe there was 6 hunters in total, 2 left early though. The group the week before us, we were told seen a couple but did not have a chance to take any. Jeff is unsure about what was happening, possibly the late spring caused a late fall. Or the bears are exercising caution with wolf's being in the area. He did ask if we could come back this year to try again but our schedule does not permit it. Here are the cons, if you see them as that way, -The drive way is almost a mile long on a rough two track. Take your time going down if hauling a trailer or a boat. -Camp is run on solar, so if you have bad weather days, you'll want to limit use if you plan to be indoors. -Wifi did not work majority of the time, even if at the club house and it's about 50 miles to cell service. We really did not need our phones but would of helped to look up weather and do some research when wanted. -The map given for the lake was small. If you plan to rent a fishing boat, having navigation and a fish finder would be a big perk to bring if your trying to find the honey holes. -A few odds and ends of the place are run down but jeff and tina are working to make updates along the way. Despite those things, we still would go back another time and hopefully next time have a successful hunt.
