Maude Bowman 1877 - 1944 Maude Bowman exercised an influence over the development of arts and history in Edmonton that extended over a thirty year period. Her role as curator and her strong commitment to the concept of preservation and education resulted in the growth of the museum of art in the face of public apathy. Bowman became the first president and the first director of the Edmonton Museum of Arts founded in 1923. During her years as curator of the museum, the permanent collection grew, and art classes and exhibitions were held at the Public Library and The Civic Block. Bowman considered the educational work of the museum more important than the preservation and display of art. Edmonton was selected by the Carnegie Foundation for finding of children’s art education programs which began in 1934, and continue today. Victoria Promenade
