About Making Roots Montessori Centre Inc.

Making Roots Montessori Centre Inc. provides full-day, licensed child care for children ages two to six years old. Making Roots is one of the few 12 month Montessori preschool and child care centres in Winnipeg. We provide a nurturing and wholistic program that is based on an authentic Montessori curriculum and methodology.

Owners Megan Turner and Kristen Shipman-Adams are experienced in a broad range of early childhood learning and care, and have a combined 26 years of experience within the child care industry. Our search for superior, engaging and nurturing child care for our own children led us to open Making Roots Montessori Centre Inc.

We have 32 licensed full-time spaces which provide year-round child care, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:30am to 5:30pm. We are trained Montessori teachers, and have an additional four caregivers on staff; all trained in early childhood education or Montessori methods. We offer a ratio of 7:1 children to caregivers, which allows us to truly embrace the Montessori philosophy of allowing a child to explore their own development rather than be held back or pushed ahead by the curve.

Our brand new facility is green, whenever possible using environmentally friendly products for Making Root's development and construction. We have a gorgeous attached green-space which fosters a child's natural movement as they explore their own environment and interests. We foster the respect of self, others and the environment. Whenever possible the products at Making Roots (food, toys, cleaning materials) are environmentally friendly, and locally sourced/organic. We wish to impart a sense of community to our students, and that starts with a pride in our own surroundings and extends to a friendly and respectful relationship with our neighbours and families.

Learning between the ages of two to six years old will serve as the roots for our children's future successes. We believe in building an educational partnership with parents during this critical time in a child's development. We want to be on board with your goals, and it is equally important that parents are on board with the Montessori philosophy and style. We suggest that for those parents that are interested, they read Montessori: Modern Day Approach (by Paula Polk Lillard) to help develop a full understanding of the school's methodology and philosophy.

Your child will flourish with the developmental edge of a Montessori education. The benefits of Making Roots Montessori Centre Inc. include:

  • A true Montessori education: Dr. Maria Montessori wanted to share her methods with children of all nationalities, and didn't believe in the restrictions of patenting an idea. However, this means that any school can call itself a Montessori school, but may not follow all of her prescribed methods and educational innovations. At Making Roots, we follow all the traditional Montessori methods and add a contemporary approach. The classroom is made up of the traditional six Montessori areas.
  • A child-centred, emergent, early-years curriculum through the use of the Best Practices guidelines for Manitoba Early Learning, as well as through the use of the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale whenever possible.
  • Nutritious, allergy-sensitive, organic snacks. Healthy snacks with a menu focused on locally-sourced and seasonal foods, with a sensitivity to the dietary restrictions of the children.
  • Environmentally conscious products, materials and supplies. We use only Canadian, US, or European-based ethical suppliers whenever possible.
  • Transparency in management and fees. Our fees are a flat rate, tailored towards families with working parents who may find the usual shortened school day difficult to accommodate. There are no hidden fees for early drop-off or late pick-up, or anything else. Our rates are comparable to other pre-schools when all of their additional fees are considered. Similarly, we are transparent in our management. We have an open door policy when it comes to questions and concerns.

Incredibly caring teachers at Making Roots. They have a creative and supportive approach to working alongside the children. Great environment to learn in!

Words can’t really express how I feel about Making Roots, and their staff. We are beyond grateful to have found a place where our son can be cared for in such a caring, enriching, and beautiful environment. This place is magic!

This is absolutely the WORST Montessori school you could have your child attend. The owners do not know ANYTHING about Montessori or childcare for that matter. The building is small, dirty, dim and they do NOT serve organic snacks. The ratio is supposed to be 1:6 but they rarely have enough staff. The turnover rate there is horrible because true Montessori teachers know that this is nothing but a glorified daycare. My children attended for a few months when we moved to the area and I withdrew them as soon as possible. The school that they are at now is full of children that left this horrible school. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Funny that one review is anonymous. Maybe they rated the wrong place. Our experience is quite the opposite. Our 2nd child is going through and its been the same kids and teachers for the past few years. They are caring, easily approachable and caters to the individual childs needs. They go above and beyond. My kids come out with not only educational skills but life skills that i would never have imagined at such a young age. They also incorporate French which was a big selling feature for me. They serve great snacks (my son is now in love with hummus) and always ensure the kids make it outside to play (unless its like freezing danger). My oldest still loves going back to visit. The empathy skills they develop are also amazing. Also its a bright space, always clean (the kids always know to take their shoes off and clean up after themselves) and the toy selection, all high quality, and Montessori approved. Can't say enough positive things. I recommend going to their open house or book a tour and see for yourself what a great place this is.

At Making Roots Montessori Centre I noticed every child’s choices, responses and capabilities are honored while interacting with valued materials and trusted individuals, whether peers or educators. There is a momentum characterized by the desire to practice and to learn. The teachers’ expertise and confidence with Montessori principles and curriculum, as well as Early Childhood Education and additional diplomas regarding childhood enrichment education allowed for the thoughtful precision used when teaching and guiding each individual learner in this unique flexible environment. Significant caring relationships with the children build bonds of trust which enable these children to be clever, warm and enthusiastic citizens. Deep appreciation to Ms.Vivienne, Ms. Megan, Mme. Sylviane, Ms. Amarpreet and Ms. Manal for this wonderful opportunity to observe your environment in action!

Our experience with Making Roots has also been wonderful. As a trained AMI Montessori teacher myself, I carefully sought out the right place for our grandson, and I must say that our family couldn't be happier. The care he has received has been stellar, and his academic progress is astounding. Best of all, he is happy at Making Roots, and so has everything he needs to rise to his potential. What more could you ask?

Ultimately, Making Roots is our Daughter's second home. She spends eight hours a day, Monday to Friday there. And the Teachers and Teacher's Assistants are her other family. We really could not have asked for a better environment to have nurtured and supported our daughter the past two years. The staff are engaged, caring and kind. This is evident when you see them interact with the children and especially when they are speaking about them. We are excited to hear about our Daughter's day and she is excited to talk about what she has learned, what she has accomplished and what was fun. We are constantly amazed at how much she is thriving. We have trusted Making Roots with our Daughter and will continue to do so for one more year.

I’m a very disappointed grandmother. Although I don’t have a child in this Montessori daycare, I had opportunity to be at the IGA next-door and upon going to my car saw that one of the 2 to 3 year old little girls was without mitts and in minus degree weather. When I said to the daycare staff shouldn’t that little girl have some thing on her hands? They said oh yes yes and as I’m backing away I hear that staff say to the children “she’ll soon learn that not wearing mitts has consequences so we will have to wait for her to decide to put them on because she doesn’t want mitts on right now! “ whose the adult?? In my mind a 2 to 3 year old will freeze their hands before realizing that maybe they should put their mitts on !!! very disappointed with this Montessori daycare you should be too if you’re a parent who has a child there.
