LTS Protective Services

A few weeks ago I had an 'incident' at a Nofrills near my house that came off as racist. While in line on my second trip to pick up a forgotten item, the security guard asked for a receipt as well as to check the contents of my plastic Nofrills bag. To others this would be no big deal or even just mildly inconveniencing, but as a person of colour in this social climate, it was devastating and embarrassing. I refused, put down the item and left the store in after verbally confirming that I had bought my items from the cashier on the furthest lane. Usually I try to move on from situations like these as fast as I can, but I felt pointed out and persecuted unfairly while in line. Even more so when I had seen an older caucasian male nonchalantly putting groceries in his reusable bag while no one said a thing, but I an already proven customer had just forgotten to buy one thing and came back only to bothered in line. Once home, I called the company, and pursued action from store level to headquarters for weeks. There was no justified explanation to the unfair treatment I had received that day, therefore things needed correction so I kept calling. Then, Cristy Coroa, the president of LTS Protective Services (who runs security for that Nofrills) called me and asked to set up a meeting for further information as well to discuss the company's response to the 'incident', so I agreed to a meeting the next morning. Cristy explained that what happened to me was the protocol at the time and as of our meeting regulations had since been overhauled as soon as the company contacted her for advice. LTS insisted on new security recommendations and decided the month of June would be best spent re-educating staff and customers on new rules/regulations to keep the store fair and safe for everyone in the community. My personal favourites of their new regulations are: 1) Security would check receipts at the front and exit doors like some major corporations. 2) Reusable bags would only be permitted when packing groceries after the paying. I am sincerely grateful that someone decided to really listen to my story. Cristy was empathic to my 'incident' and took action immediately. In the hour that we spent together, I learned that she loves her job and wants to make the world a better place, not only by preventing people from committing crimes, but trying to get others to understand that people are not their crimes and that observation as well as talk is an important factor of being in security.
