LaPerle School - Laperle.epsb.ca

At LaPerle School our ultimate goal is to have every student achieve at least one year’s growth in relation to the curriculum standard each year. In previous years most of our students did achieve one or more years growth in reading and writing. To do this we place a strong emphasis in the areas of literacy and numeracy, specifically to engage students in learning through 21st Century Literacies across the curriculum.

To accomplish our goal, we have set a strategic framework for whole school improvement:

•    develop professional collaboration teams to improve teaching and learning

•    identify, learn and use effective research-based teaching practices

•    create a targeted professional development plan that builds expertise in selected best practices

•    re-align resources (people, time, talent, energy and money) to support the instructional focus

•    engage families and the community in supporting the instructional focus

•    create an internal accountability system growing out of student learning goals that promote measurable gains in learning for every student

As a former student of this school, I found all the teachers to be awesome and caring. They treated us like individuals and helped us be the best we could be.

I have met the teachers from La Perla school and I find them all to be wonderful absolutely wonderful especially Mrs. BOYD she goes above and beyond the call of duty to her students it would be an honour to have her as your teacher at that school

I had particularly many issue with my daughter's teacher for grade 2 Ms. Boyd. Ms. Boyd’s authoritarian teaching style seems inappropriate for a class of seven-year-old children. My daughter frequently came home crying, reporting that Ms. Boyd had yelled at her or disciplined her. In particular, she explained that Ms. Boyd constantly screams at the children and forces them to sit still for long periods of time. In addition, Ms. Boyd gave K. a β€œC” in reading on her December report card and informed that Karina read at a Grade One level. Since K. achieved marks of β€œA” and B” in all of her Grade One subjects, I found it strange that her abilities had deteriorated rather than merely stagnated. As a result, I conducted INDEPENDENT TESTING BY SENIOR TEACHERS FROM A PRIVATE SCHOOL on K. to find that she successfully completed all of her Grade Two Level tests, thus suggesting that Ms. Boyd’s assessment system may contain flaws. Alternatively, the discrepancy between these two results may indicate poor teaching or even bias against certain students. When I came to the teacher's office to discuss all issues related to my daughter's performance and other issues; Ms. Boyd talked with me from the position of power, from up to down due to my foreign accent (I've been working overseas more than 20 years) and despite I am holding three different degrees (two from Canadian universities; one is an undergraduate, the second one is a Master's)... In addition, Ms. Boyd lacks the concern to attend promptly to classroom issues that arise. For instance, K. arrived home three separate times with lice; although the outbreak of lice cannot necessary be attributed to Ms. Boyd, the repeated occurrence of this disease suggests her inability to contain the spread or properly report it to authorities. K. also experienced an assault from another boy on the playground as testified by her bruises, and, when we spoke to Ms. Boyd, she neglected to address the matter further. Lastly, her lack of professionalism seems apparent by the fact that she spends classroom time messaging her friends rather than attending to the children as well as the fact that I suspected smelling alcohol on her breath on one occasion (her very often Monday's sickness seems quite suspicious too). I've written the complaint to ATA association regarding Ms.Boyd and met with the ATA investigator Keith Hadden; 11 months passed and nothing so far, silence... Provided two new reports from another school regarding my daughter's performance; my daughter got SEVEN EXCELLENT MARKS, TWO GOOD (compare with many biased "C" grades from the La Perle school)... Pick a school (with an unbiased and disinterested principal) and teachers carefully and keep control on teacher of your child. It takes me six months to bring my daughter to a reasonable level and she has started enjoying learning process at the different school again. It's our kids future and happiness!!!

La Perle is an excellent school. It’s clear the teachers care for the students and their success. They create a very positive and safe environment for them. The teachers also clearly enjoy their work and have fun doing it.

My daughter has been attending La Perle since pre-school (she’s in 4th grade now) and we’ve been very happy! Each teacher has had a unique style but nevertheless found techniques that inspired my daughter and helped her to achieve great marks each year. I would gladly recommend this school to anyone in West Edmonton!

LaPerle is a wonderful school with excellent teachers. My granddaughter has attended this school for the past 5 years including pre-school. We have found the staff to be highly professional with top standards with regard to both academics and social development of the students.

Everyone i know that went here was bullied at some point, not only by other kids, but by teachers too. Doesn’t matter how many times you’d complain, the school kept saying β€œwe don’t have bullies here”. Many people I knew moved different schools because they’d go home crying everyday. Many teachers were very nice though, Mrs. Boyd was amazing. Mr. Sonnichson was cool. Mrs. Dalmer was my favourite, but apparently she got fired for trying to fix the bullying problem. but, when i went here we had a bad principle. I hear the new principle is doing a much better job at running the school and I applaud him.

I have been associated with LaPerle for many years and I have always found the quality of instruction excellent. The teacher go above and beyond expectations caring for children and their individual needs. Strong academic, artistic, musical, and soft skills like kindness and empathy are taught. I would not hesitate to recommend this school to any parents wanting to enroll their child.
