This is one of the most visited places in Banff. Anyone should be able to hike up to the upper falls easily (5-6ish kilometres, with not much gain in elevation). This place looks gorgeous in both summer and winter, and hence one can visit both times. A lot of people tend to visit this place at all times, so you can expect some crowd. Once you see the upper falls, you can also walk up to the Ink Pots (which is a further 3-4 kilometres away).

What a beautiful attainable hike. We visited in spring (March). Trails were snowpacked so highly recommend ice cleats or spikes on your shoes (during snow months) 3 hiking destinations: lower, upper and ink pots.

This was an epic hike, even in the cold of winter. It was 8 degrees Fahrenheit when we did this, but we just put on thermals, bundled up and got moving and we were fine. We were actually sweating a little at one point. I’d classify even the trek to the upper falls as a moderate hike given its only about 4 km roundtrip. We did it in 90 minutes though I’d say most people would probably want to give themselves a full 2 hours. There can be a little bit of a line to see the lower falls up close as there’s a small cave there that bottlenecks a bit. The views are absolutely stunning though and i wouldn’t miss this trail regardless of the time of year you’re in Banff. It’s on a gorgeous part of the old highway between Banff and Lake Louise, and your chance of spotting wildlife is very high in the area (we saw a moose). If you’re going in winter obviously dress warm and even though some people had them, don’t feel like you need cleats or ice shoes unless you’re prone to falls or unsure of yourself when hiking. We went in boots and were absolutely fine. Even if you’re looking for a longer or more strenuous trail, I recommend making time for Johnston Canyon. And if you have the time, push on to the Upper Falls! It’s well worth it!

It was Beautiful hike along the side of the canyon towards the Lower falls. The Lower falls trail is around 1 to 1.2 km, it took us around 45mins to reach here. The trail was easy to moderate with guardrails. There are several viewpoints along the trail at Johnston canyon offering spectacular views of the canyon. Waterfall is so beautiful and stunning. It was worth the hike. Don’t forget to go through the little cave to a viewing platform when you get to the falls. What a fantastic experience! A must visit place when visiting Banff!! Highly recommend!!

Easy and small hike to the lower falls. You can go to the upper falls if you looking for a more steep and longer hike. The falls itself are great to experience with turquoise water flowing off a 30-40m cliff. People do tend to queue up near the photo op spot due to accessibility to that area. Wonderful place overall for everyone to enjoy.

Simply amazing spot for a hike in the winter. The hike to the frozen upper falls took us a couple of hours but that's due to LOTS of stops for photos. There was a wait to see the lower falls up close which I am not sure is worth the 20 minute wait. Would love to come back here in the summer too.

Very nice and easy hike. While several other hiking trails are still closed (early May 2022), the Johnston canyon trail is open. P1 was pretty busy, but on the trail it was well spread out. We had a good time during our hike and enjoyed the scenery.

Visited : May 14 2022 It's a simple hike and easily doable for all experience level . However many portions of the trail are covered with ice, we initially mistook it for concrete but it was hard ice and extremely slippery. You should be fine with proper hiking boots. Running shoes and slippers can be extremely dangerous. Watch your head while hiking the cave before the falls!
