About Humpty's Family Restaurant - Medicine Hat

Humpty’s Restaurants International Inc. is proud to be one of Canada’s leading franchisors of full-service family restaurants. We currently have 45 Humpty’s Family Restaurant locations across Western Canada.

History

Humpty’s was founded in 1977 by Don and Jan Koenig – a couple with no restaurant experience – who in 1974 bought a small 50 seat establishment in Blackie, Alberta. By 1976 their business grew into the Calgary market where they established a catering company alongside three soup and sandwich shops. Don and Jan had spent a year researching the breakfast market and found that there was an underserved opportunity in all day breakfast. Based on this research, they converted one of their soup and sandwich shops into the first Humpty’s Egg Place in November 1977. The restaurant’s original name came from the association between eggs, the all day breakfast concept and the storybook character Humpty Dumpty. Given that families were a key target for the new restaurant, the association between breakfast and the character was a natural fit. Two new Calgary locations were quickly added in 1979 and 1981. Due to their success and the volume of franchise inquires from across North America, Humpty’s got approval to franchise from the Alberta Securities Commission in 1982. In April 1986, Humpty’s awarded it’s first franchise in Red Deer, Alberta and within three months, another Humpty’s franchise was awarded in Lethbridge with two others following in Edmonton. In 1988, Humpty’s Egg Place became Humpty’s Family Restaurants, as the focus changed from exclusively breakfast to a more creative offering of unique breakfast, lunch and dinner items. While the breakfast menu had established them as innovative leaders, the menu and name changes allowed Humpty’s to remain competitive in a market that demanded more than just breakfast. Between 1988 and 1990 Humpty’s awarded twenty more franchises and today have 49 locations across Western Canada.

Today

With its prototype store and head office located in Calgary Alberta, Humpty’s has grown to become an industry leader in franchising and Canadian foodservice. With an award-winning menu, creative meal selections and a commitment to community and charitable causes like the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Humpty’s has become the choice of the Western Canadian extended family market – mom, dad, the kids and grandma and grandpa too. As Humpty’s moves forward, we will continue to employ the innovation and tenacity that has brought us to where we are today and we look forward to welcoming you to one of our restaurants soon!

I don't know what happened but somehow my classic burger with sauteed mushrooms was bitter. Literally bitter. I deconstructed the burger and turns out the mushrooms was the main culprit and the burger was burnt. That's just about the burger. I have a list. - I ordered fries and gravy- there was no gravy. - the pulled pork pasta is one of the worst pastas I've ever had. They decided to add crunch onion rings like things on top. There were a lot of them and tried to eat around it but to no avail. - The apple pie was too sweet. I mostly avoided the centre by eating the crust and the crust wasn't sweet enough. I'm not a profession food reviewer but I did not enjoy it at al all. -The buns on the burger were soft and soggy. They had wrapped it tight and it soaked in it's own condensation. And that's the main reason I had to deconstruct the burger in the first place. About food, this is one of the worst decisions I've ever made.

Waited 45 minutes for service, decided to leave. To be fair the waitress was the only one looking after the whole restaurant so it really wasn't her fault. Management need to make sure that there are more staff working.

The mist amount on my plate was the toast...plus 3.00 for a cup of coffee..will not go back.. not worth the price..very disappointed

Review Date: July 13th, 2015 Humpty Dumpty had a great fall into the skillet and onto my plate. About 36 hours (I think, it was a long drive) in to our cross country trip, it was time to stop for food. Following road signs, we all thought Humpty’s sounded like a fun place to eat based on the just the name. No Googling or Yelping here. We picked it based solely on the name. What a yummy decision it was. As we pulled up to park, I honestly thought the place wasn’t open. There were hardly any other cars around and looking at the restaurant from the outside, it appeared to be closed. But, that didn’t deter 5 hungry people from trying to go in. Luckily, first appearances were false as they were open and ready to serve food… it just wasn’t busy at that time. The hostess was nice enough to give us a big enough booth to sit us all and gave us our menus and told us to have a nice day. I was ready to pour over the menu and see what a sit-down restaurant in Canada offers. I was quickly surprised by how many common items were on the menu. Pancakes? Yep. Burgers? Many varieties to pick from. Bacon, eggs, toast? Yup, yup, yup. I ended up settling on a basic breakfast. On the current menu, it is similar to the Famous Cowboy Breakfast. Eggs, bacon, toast, and… mini pierogies? I think it came with mini-pierogies and that was unusual and unique for a breakfast item. This was my first time having them… so why not? As the food was served, we all attacked our plates with a hungry fervor of someone who is traveling across two countries. With it being a pretty standard breakfast aside from the pierogies, I wasn’t expecting much in the terms of flavor… but wow! The basic look of the food hid the fact that it was packed full of great flavor. Mixing my jellied toast with the eggs was just what I needed. The bacon was alright tasting from what I remember. A bit dry but eggs helped that. As I was working my way through the food, I kept eyeing the pierogies. I knew it was time to try one halfway through my meal. I nervously stabbed it with my fork and dipped a bit of it in my egg sauce. One small bite. Then a big bite. Then I inhaled the rest. I quickly picked up the other one and made it disappear in a matter of seconds. I fell in love with those little circles of whatever makes them up. My meal came with a white dipping sauce but I don’t remember what it was. Maybe sour creme? As I resumed my meal, we all ruminated on our trip so far and everyone seemed satisfied with their meals. By the times my fork was put down, I was satiated, as was everyone else. The meal was definitely a home run aside from the bacon being a bit of a let down. Glancing around, I noticed the interior felt familiar and then it struck me. This place made me think of a Denny’s restaurant. I’ve been to our local Denny’s many times so I felt right at home, in an odd sort of way. All that was missing was the sassy waiter named ‘Tim’ and intoxicated people. All the King’s horses and all the King’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again. But the King’s cook could place him on my plate.

So much better than I thought. We had a Monte Cristo and soup/fries. Was very well done, tasty and hot. The menu is a good variety. Good prices.

Great service, the food is good. But it's the service that stood out. They served my family of 10 with ease. Treated us very well for people just passing through.

I've been going there since I was a child. It's very sad to see it so slow. But the server was wonderful, the food was delicious. And the decor is very beautiful. They even have mashed potatoes or baby pancakes for free for babies/young kids. Kids eat free on Friday (can't remember the times for that) Always get really good food. I'm never disappointed. Thank you Humptys! ❤️
