Handsome Dan's Port Renfrew

Great set of cottages all individual owned and rented out by Handsome Dan. Stayed 2 nights in the Cedar box which felt nice and private and in the woods with a fire pit and beautiful porch. Also stayed 2 nights in the Tiltin Hilton which had lovely views of the water and a great deck to sit out on including a fire pit too! Would definitely go back!

Stayed at Handsome Dan's for three nights at this absolutely beautiful and well maintained cottage. From what I understand, there's a variety of sizes to book. We (husband and wife) stayed in #3 - Villa Johanne, which is the smallest size. This cabin included, 1 bed, 1 full bath, and well equipped kitchen and living room combo with pull out sofa bed. Technically the cabin sleeps 4, but in my opinion, it would be on the smaller side for two couples to share, unless you got along really well!! It's the perfect size for a couple and one or two children. You may want to upgrade to something larger otherwise. I can't say enough about the lovely decor, inside and out. Out front on the deck is a BBQ and a fire pit, with tons of firewood stored behind the cabin. There is an electric fireplace in the bedroom, and baseboard heating inside the cabin in all of the rooms for the cooler months. Cabin also came equipped with a large TV in the bedroom, and a smaller one in the living room. Our cabin came with Netflix- not too sure about the others. However, living room television came with Smart Hub, so you can use YouTube, Netflix etc if you have your own accounts. There was also a nice speaker set with AUX, Bluetooth, CD, radio, etc capabilities. I connected my laptop to the unit via Bluetooth in order to watch a movie with excellent sound. Check out the photos of the cabins on Handsome Dan's website. The kitchen was incredibly well stocked with basic kitchen equipment. Ours even had a rice cooker and a slow cooker. We flew from another province, so having everything we needed at our fingertips was a big plus. I would recommend bringing tin foil, plastic wrap, ziploc bags, and maybe an extra tea towel or two. The cabin came with enough pillows, sheets and comforters for 4 people, ie. One pillow each. Bring extras from home if you can. Otherwise - everything else was provided. They even had rolls of paper towel! Location was also excellent. Theres a fairly well stocked general store a one minute drive away. Botanical beach is a MUST see as well (less than 10 mins by car, about an hour walk) The cabin was very clean upon our arrival. (Yes the cleaning fee is a bit high - but remember that Port Renfrew is quite literally in the middle of nowhere, and with that comes extra costs) ** plus - whether you stay for 1 night or 3+, the cleaning fee is the same. Be wise about the length of your stay! ** Thanks Handsome Dan - we will definitely be back!

It had everything we needed and quite cozy but they need to replace the BBQ badly. Reviews from three years ago said the same thing. It really is gross and we had to cook our steaks in a frying pan. We stayed in cabin #84.

It's a nice quiet place but slightly over priced for what you get.... we slept in cabin #84. The cutlery, pots n pans & other utensils were all unmatched, stained & super difficult to clean (the frying pans were unusable). The bed was really uncomfortable as well. I'm not a picky person but I do hope for a comfy bed and pans that are usable. There's no view but the deck was fenced and fantastic with fire pit & BBQ. I wish there was a walk way down to a beach there as well. We would stay again and give it another chance but not in cabin #84. The fenced deck was great for the dogs and nice not to pay extra for them like most places. Cleaning fee was a bit ridiculous considering the place wasn't clean really at all, which I mean was fine for us but might not be for others. Cob webs on walls & ceilings, both mats were dirty and gross (but maybe because it was pet friendly?) We rolled the mats up and didn't use them as I didn't want the kids bare feet on such a dirty floor mat in livingroom. Also the tub didn't drain until the next day after a 10 min shower. I love port Renfrew and I'm 29 weeks pregnant so I wasn't about to go camping. The cabin was a good alternative and was quite private & peaceful.

Booked a cabin last minute as we wanted to pass through and see the area on our way back to Victoria. Booked on Booking.com . Didn’t pay attention to the extra fees under the daily rate as they are always just some extra taxes. Got the credit card statement and thought they charged us for 2 nights. Nope- $140 a night for the cabin and $180 a night for cleaning and taxes. I can understand a big cleaning fee if you stayed for a week or two- but for a quick overnight stay- seemed quite excessive. Was our most expensive stay while on the island. Stayed in a waterfront room in Victoria in the Regent (full kitchen and separate bedroom suite for $250 all in) Disappointed in this one- seems like the remoteness of the place works in their favor for over charging. Lesson learned…..

$125 cleaning fee? Shouldn’t that be part of the actual nightly rate? Ridiculous prices. Especially when it doesn’t matter if you’ve been there 3 days or 3 weeks. And it says a lot about a place when management replies to reviews as ignorant as they did for the review below mine!

Just spent our holiday weekend here, eight of us together at Hndsome Dan's the largest cottage, Fish Tales. What a fantastic cottage. Wonderful comfortable beds with great linens, wonderful amenities and so well maintained, and the kitchen had absolutely every single thing we needed in order to create all our meals. First time in 20 years I haven't had to use my own stuff that I bring everywhere I go, because no one has everything, but this place had everything we needed. Fantastic vacation for all of us, would go back in a heartbeat. And amazing communication, information and service from the hosts, especially helpful in such a remote location. A 10 out of 10 for us!
