★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I had the best automotive repair experience of my life at this mechanic. Having fairly recently moved to the island I was a little reluctant to try a small island repair shop. But my check engine light had recently come on, my Jeep was running rough, so I stopped by and asked the cost of a diagnostic, and they told me less than $50 so I gave them a try.
Brought it in for my appointment, and went for a walk, and when I came back the girl was having trouble getting a reading from the onboard computer. After trying for about a half hour, she suggested that I bring it back when a certain mechanic was working, and he would be better suited to figure out the problem. She seemed to think it was an O2 valve issue based on my description of the problem, but I made an appointment to bring it back.
Did a bit of research on O2 censors, and it sounded like she was right, and that was the issue. Still, I almost cancelled my new appointment and brought it to the island to a dealer, but glad I didn't.
When I brought it back, the fellow very quickly told me it was actually a universal joint issue. Even invited me into the bay to show me. They quoted me about $310 including labour to fix, so I went ahead and scheduled the work. When I asked how much it was for the diagnosis, they told me not to worry, they would just tack a few bucks onto the repair.
So a few days later the repair is carried out. I'm thinking probably about $350, to my astonishment it's just over $200. AND it's now running perfectly.
Highly recommend this place.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I was buying a vehicle from someone on Gabriola island. (Disclaimer: I did my own test drive, visual inspection, and compression test of the vehicle.) I also wanted a mechanical inspection. So naturally I had the owner bring it here for additional inspection. On the report from Gabriola Automotive they said "Rear brakes have LR 1mm RR 1mm rear shoes getting low". Needless to say, I bought the vehicle from the previous owners. Two months later I finally set a side a day to replace the shoes. Only to discover that I still had ~4-5mm left on my shoes. (My new ones had 6mm). Picture below of the old and new. Can you tell the difference? Disappointed, I still replaced the brakes.
However, they were very friendly on the phone. I have mixed feelings as I now doubt everything else they said on the report.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Went here 2 times. Once out of emergency and another wanting to make an appointment. Each time I had the WORST customer service EVER from the front counter lady, and the mechanics were reluctant to help - If your over worked it isn't my fault! She was very stressed and seemed to make it my problem. I have had better service at McDonalds.
They do not deserve your business EVER. Totally disappointed. I guess because they are the only mechanic shop on Gabriola they monopolize and don't care about how they treat their customers.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I can not believe how these guys came together to help us out today when as visitors the starter died in our big dodge camper van . They hosted me for 3 hours while the other half walked on the ferry to get the starter we needed from Nanaimo . Let me take our cat inside . Gave me a charger for my phone because our whole house was on a hoist and the. After all that . Gave me a car to get my other part from the ferry and ... Charged us 30 minutes labor to do the job. Huge huge thank you . These guys came through absolutely for us today . May good karma shine on all of you
