Used to love this place, fresh, cheap and great food. That changed this weekend after I bought a rice ball and a couple california rolls. The rolls were good as usual but the rice ball had what it looked like fruit fly eggs on the bottom part of the rice, after further inspection I noticed even more on the inside of the ball. I’ve bought rice balls before and never seen such peculiar β€œingredient”. Rice used on that batch looked like it wasn't cleaned or rinsed before use. That experience was pretty bad and disgusting having worked on restaurants for more than a decade, never seen such a thing.

Great place to stock up on kitchen staples. They have everything from snacks, dried goods, to fresh produce and sashimi. Nice selection of prepared sushi and bento boxes if you are looking for a quick bite. Place can get quite busy, so I like to do my shopping early when they open. Parking lot is tight and busy, but flows pretty well.

Update: Inflation has raised the price of California Rolls to $3.95 and only for 8 pieces. I still remember the 12-piece days of my youth. They are still a great deal and Fuijya seem to have solved their rice texture. It's soft and tender now unlike in the past when they were kinda hard especially if bought a little later. Just come here. There's a reason why Fujiya is so popular! This Fujiya is the original one and has been around for as long as my parents have been here. They are known for their $2.95 California Roll which amazingly is the same price for 15+ years! I still remember the old days when they had a small variety of options. Now they have so many different types of rolls and sushi. The grocery has a lot of snacks and food from Japan. Plus, they offer sashimi grade fish and seafood. We have actually gotten sashimi here to make our own sushi and they were good quality. I wished they would expand into Calgary so I can be a regular customer again.

What a great little Japanese Supermarket! Well priced and good variety of stuff. I usually go there during my lunch hour to get some ready-made lunches, they are fresh and delicious. I like supporting this homey local shop and it can get pretty busy!

This is our favorite market for authentic Japanese food. I normally come here for their homemade fried fish cakes with vegetables, tea, seaweed, and black cod. The price here is fair, with a healthy variety of good quality Japanese products. The staffs here are friendly most of the time. Unfortunately, today, I had a very bad experience. When I ordered two pieces of black cod and asked the man behind the counter to pack my fish separately, he was very unhappy, and when I saw him reaching for the halibut, I asked him to confirm that what I ordered was the black cod. His face turned red behind his mask and I can still feel his anger. He said he put the second piece behind the halibut, loud and angrily. I was disappointed that he lost his temper over such a little thing.

My wife really enjoys the food / bentos available here. The pricing is fair and they have a great selection. They also have some grocery items / snacks.

Great selection of premade sushi lunch boxes and other Japanese food delights. Party trays. You name it. This is not the only location. But yet I think it is the largest Japanese grocery store on the east side. Lots of fish choices and lots of Japanese type of food products. You can no longer In due to Covid, But that’s OK. Just take it home or at the park.

This authentic Japanese grocer has been around for decades. They offer everything you need from assorted takeout sushi to purchasing ingredients to create your own sushi. Everything is priced reasonably and the sushi is made fresh. Sushi is available even for vegetarians. I had the spicy avocado tempera which was yummy and healthy. They have quite an assortment of fish cakes in their deli section. If you want tasty and quality sushi at great prices this is the place especially if you are having a party. This is the locals go to place for decades. I usually go to the Clark Drive location but there are other locations such as downtown Vancouver, Richmond, and Victoria. The one on Clark Drive is open 7 days a week from 10:30 am – 6:00 pm. A great stop if you have a hankering for sushi after work. They have a small parking lot but there’s usually free parking on Venables.
