★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great store, they have everything. Guy knows where all his books are too. Someone here complained about smoking, I have see him outside in the rain smoking but there is no smell of smoke in the store. Have a great day and read a book.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I love this place, and the fact that they have Toonie ($2) books. I find all sorts of gems, from textbooks, philosophy, fiction, to autobiographies and song books. They have some books in languages other than English, too! And you can tell the employees read a LOT. They have great recommendations :)

I am a young woman and I felt extremely objectified and uncomfortable in this store. Who ever was working there at that time had very unprofessional behaviour, and the way he acted makes my skin crawl. I have never felt so at unease in a bookstore before, and I do not recommend it if you are also a teenager/ young woman.
If you are only interested in the quality of the books, I still do not recommend it. It is disorganized, it has a strong odour and most of the books are in such bad condition that they are falling apart.
Going to this store is unethical and a waste of time.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A good selection of hard to find older fiction. Seemed like lots of nonfiction too, but I didn't browse those shelves. I was expecting a cigarette smell but didn't notice one, just the smell of older books. Man working there said he smoked, but not in the shop.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The shelves are a delightful and somewhat confusing scramble and the proprietor knows his collection well. If he doesn't have what you're looking for, he can often make a spot on suggestion. I've discovered some great new authors from him and had some lovely chats about books.
Books feel a little pricey, but he often has books that are hard to find elsewhere.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ First Canadian Used Books is a small inconspicuous store. The first thing I noticed upon entering was the strong malodorous stench of prolonged cigarette smoke. It was prevalent throughout the store, and felt like all the books are saturated by secondhand smoke residue.
Shelves are half-empty; books are in quite shoddy condition—the couple I was interested in purchasing weren't too bad, but upon closer inspection their pages were dirty (stains, dust within pages), and the fore edges mildly sticky. It seems curation is quite relaxed, as I saw some old issues of Playboy among books.
I suppose depending on what you're interests are you may find something you fancy, but I found nothing, and will not be revisiting First Canadian Used Books.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Might not have what you want, but does have what you need. I was browsing and considered picking up a certain history book, but decided against it (in favour of some other books). The next day a book club randomly brought up that history book, so I ran back and grabbed it. A certain unassuming magic to the shop, to be sure
