As with any school, experiences from people like "forti L" are expected. At ECU, it's certainly not the norm, but if you're an unmotivated write off, you're going to lose out on experiences. There's very little hand holding at Emily Carr University. There are many good teachers, a few amazing ones, and a few terrible ones, just like any other school. Clear and regular communication is necessary with teachers to ensure you maximize what you get out of your education. Many people who've complained about the school are ones who regularly sit in the class and do so quietly, while rarely or never speaking up and interacting in the discussions. It's no surprise they end up feeling ripped off; They wasted their best chance at a quality education by sitting on the side lines and watching life go by. For those looking to go into technology-heavy areas of art/design, be wary about your expectations. They are not bleeding edge here, and those that make the most of their education here see that the analog parallels are far more beneficial than learning strictly one area/medium. This school has a great balance between course costs and quality of education. It's one of the world's best schools, but not THE best, and it's worlds above the worst of the lot.

This school is a little rough along the edges, especially with higher ups managing the school. However, I have been lucky enough to meet some amazing teachers in the time I've spent there. The illustration department has a lot of new faces that truely care and want us to succeed.

I tried two of their workshops (painting), and they were totally useless. I was very disappointed after the first one but I again took another one because I thought I'd give them another chance. Wrong choice. They basically don't teach you ANYTHING, the instructor sits there finishing his/her own work, and it's you doing your work and then going home. And when you ask questions they say go figure it out yourself, there is no right or wrong in painting! So what's exactly the point of having a teacher?! I suppose I could do that by myself at home without having to pay a few hundred bucks! I have taken some short courses in Europe, and it's not even comparable to what these people do here. They teach you the techniques and inspire you to make creative art work, not just sit there resting and claiming art cannot be taught!! Shame on the art education system here. And that's not just me, I knew a girl who had finished her BA in fine arts (major in sculpture) here, she also said the same thing, that she didn't learn anything new throughout the 3-4 year program. So she basically finished with what she already knew before applying. Waste of time and money. Vancouver needs a real art school.

Even if you’re not an artistic person, you would still fall in love with the vibe.

Emily Carr is a great school, I’ve learnt a lot here. I don’t recommend this school for beginner artists. Develop a practice/specialty and you’ll be able to take a lot more from this school and it’s courses

I attended ECUAD for 1 year of graduate studies in 2015, while the new campus was undergoing construction and community 'consultation'. If nothing else, this 'university' needs to change its name. Emily Carr the artist would be rolling in her grave. This new campus is built on the former False Creek shoreline, where 59 pine trees (plus) were clearcut while the City was on its way to becoming the 'Greenest City by 2020'. Emily Carr was not for the destruction of trees and was about using her art to share the truth of the landscape and its inhabitants - not the erasure and development of them. We shared our concerns and ideas with not only instructors, but the developers and city planners at the time, and were only given lip service. What kind of forward-thinking art school doesn't prioritize environmental and social justice alongside the creative process? I ended up leaving because I didn't want my name associated with being a graduate of this school. (The only reason I gave it 2 stars and not 1 is because of some of the instructors and artists I met, who became my creative allies and friends).

Emily Carr have a nice bright and clean looking campus. Next time I am there I'll try to get a few nicer photos. I was just dropping my son off so can't speak to their level of education though I do work at a university myself in the Sciences and through my colleges I have generally heard good things about EC. We shall see.

Emily Carr is has so many advantages that you just can’t find in other schools. They have a career counselling service, career fairs, and an awesome co-op program. And the Canada 150 Scholarship is just the cherry on top. It’s definitely considered one of the great options out there for artistic and creative education.
