About Elk Island Retreat

Our Story

The 60 acre parcel of land on which Elk Island Retreat is located, has been our home since 1981. Incorporated in 1995, we slowly built Elk Island Retreat to what it is today with the help of our four sons. We started out with a few seasonal unserviced sites and then in 2000 erected our first tipis. Soon after that we built the 2 rustic trapper cabins with canvas walls and wood burning stoves and then put in the first 18 full service RV sites. In May of 2009 we opened the second RV park with another 18 full service sites. In 2018 we built 2 beautiful yurts that became operational in 2019 complete with power and heat. The original trapper cabins were revamped in 2019 with insulated walls and ceiling, windows installed, and power, and heat were added. In 2020 we added 2 “out-of-this-world” geodesic domes and the cozy Wood’s Cabin. Another 2 domes were added in 2021.

Building the campground from the ground up really has been a labor of love. We take pride in what we do and we hope it is obvious to our guests. Over the years we have hosted many Girl Guide and Boy Scout groups, church groups, family reunions, and a few weddings. In addition to the many groups Elk Island Retreat has hosted we have been pleased to have local visitors stay with us as well as guests from all over the world. Many of our guests have commented on the peacefulness and cleanliness they have experienced during their stay.

A number of film production companies have used this site for their filming location.

We feel blessed to have been allowed to enjoy this gem of natural beauty and we wish to share it with our visitors. We trust you will find a "feel at home" welcoming atmosphere here.

Beautiful sunsets every night at the entrance facing west. Clean facilities (washrooms, showers and laundry). Became my home for the summer and I’m thankful for that.

Located in the valley of the resort, you are far away from any distractions of other campers. We had an issue with the fridge making noise the first night and mentioned it to the owners and they immediately replaced the fridge!! No issues at all!! The resort is very close to one of the back entrances to the park and this makes for no lineups to get in! I strongly recommend these yurts! Very comfortable, great staff, and secluded. Couldn’t ask for a better experience!!

My husband and I love camping so this was the first time we did it in the winter and I gotta tell you I have never been soooo comfortable camping especially with a toddler. We stayed at the yurt and it was soooooo clean and sooo organized that I kept on talking about it to my family members and freinds to check it out. I could go on and on about this place. We are for sure coming back soon! FYI for those whose love their privacy this is the place to be.

I stayed in The Woods cabin which had a great little fireplace and the best rocking chairs. Very cozy and amazing! Outdoor firepit and BBQ with a complementary bundle of firewood. Everything you need for a peaceful Alberta getaway.

A short drive from Edmonton, Elk Island Retreat is a gem situated right by Elk Island Park. On arrival, there was one small issue that the retreat staff responded to immediately and went above and beyond to correct. The staff were incredibly friendly and thorough and deserve 5 stars for the service alone. The dome itself is a very warm and cozy experience, with a great view of the trees making us feel like we were in the wilderness. There is electricity and heating in the dome in the form of a gas fireplace, further adding to the ambiance. The barbecue and cooking shelter was also clean, well maintained, and the barbecue itself had a side burner for doing more than just grilling. The staff provided us with a large water jug that was filled on our arrival, which is used for dishes and drinking water. Flush toilets, showers and laundry are a good 5 minute walk away, so I recommend bringing a bicycle if you don’t feel like walking. The shower and toilet facility was very clean but make sure you bring loonies for the shower. I would have liked it if the potable water source was well labelled, but that is a minor issue. Overall: Clean site, cozy and beautiful geodome, privacy, responsive and friendly staff, great proximity to Elk Island National Park. A cross between luxury hotel room and campsite.

My friend and I stayed in the Solaris geodome over the weekend (March 25-27) and had a wonderful time decompressing - relaxing into nature, grounding, and just doing whatever we wanted…which was a whole lot of nothing! We did take to the couple trails in the area (quick, relatively easy, both about 2km loop) for fresh air/change of scenery. The decor in the geodome is on theme, and the dome and surroundings are well kept and clean. If you wanted different trails, Elk Island is nearby with plenty of that to offer. Thanks for a wonderful time!
K	Kelsey Bailey on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We just stayed in Spruce Hollow Geo Dome, it was absolutely beautiful and spectacular stay, everyone was very friendly, the dome was clean, spacious and just so cozy. The outhouse we used was even very clean. I've already recommended this place to a few people absolutely stunning. The owners did a very wonderful job on this place. We had the bits and bites charcuterie board for one of our meals, the lady who brought it to our dome was super friendly and gave a run down of the board, you can tell she took pride in doing the boards.

The trails surrounding were easy enough and had lots of wildlife. Clean facilities nearby. Cooking outside on the barbecue and sitting by the campfire was a good way to enjoy the winter! Will definitely be returning to check out the domes!
