About East India Company Pub & Eatery

In the early 1970s, newcomers to Canada, Kamal and Sudha Mehra, opened their first restaurant, Mehra’s Delicatessen, on McDermot Avenue across from Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre. The couple served a host of deli sandwiches — including the famous “Mehra’s Special” (5oz. of rolled corned beef and pastrami, topped with Sudha’s secret hot mustard and melted Swiss cheese). Kamal’s mother, Usha Mehra, immigrated to Canada a year later, and the family founded Winnipeg’s first North Indian restaurant, India Gardens, featuring all of Mrs. Mehra’s original recipes and Winnipeg’s first five-star buffet. Over the years, Kamal and Sudha Mehra enamoured thousands of diners with those dishes. In 1994, the Mehras decided to expand, and opened their York Avenue location in Winnipeg, naming it East India Company. Their dedication to South Asian cuisine and culture, through the legacy they created, was felt both locally and nationally. Today, Sudha Mehra and her children carry forward this legacy of cuisine through three five-star restaurants in Winnipeg and Ottawa.

Over the last fifty years, East India Company restaurants have established themselves as providing exceptional fine-dining experiences. Our Garam Masala — a fine blend of spices roasted and ground to make the base to our most classic and flavourful curries — is a Mehra family recipe that dates back five generations and distinguishes our dishes from all others. Our chefs have been trained personally by Kamal and Sudha Mehra, and our Executive Chef, Nitin Mehra, sets the menus in each location, providing something spectacular and inspired, whether at lunch or dinner. Our restaurants are filled with centuries-old Indian wood carvings, paintings, and intricate tapestries — all chosen personally by Kamal Mehra, who had an undeniable passion for South Asian art. It is our commitment to providing outstanding North Indian dishes, the careful selection of antique artwork that adorns our walls, and our family’s dedication to creating an open and friendly atmosphere that sets our restaurants apart.

We take pride in our strong, family-centered management team. Sudha Mehra oversees the operations of all locations, and is based in Winnipeg. She has passed on her decades of experience and knowledge to her children, who have carried on the family’s passion for hospitality and fine Indian cuisine.

Sachit Mehra, the eldest son of Kamal and Sudha, has been a part of the East India Company since 1994. He is trained and qualified in every facet of the restaurant’s operation, and currently manages our Winnipeg location. His dedication to his family’s history can be seen in his passion for providing a friendly and family-oriented dining experience to all who walk through our Winnipeg location’s doors.

Anish Mehra is graduate of the University of Guelph, specializing in Hotel and Tourism Management. He is also a certified Sommelier and brings his keen knowledge and expertise to the management of our Ottawa locations’ daily operations. His enthusiasm in expanding the business through Ontario is matched only by his devotion to customer satisfaction.

Divya Mehra, Kamal and Sudha’s daughter, assists Sudha and Sachit in managing the Winnipeg location. An internationally renowned artist, Divya shares her father’s passion for art, evident in the unique and exquisite pieces that decorate the walls of all our locations. She’s committed to creating a one-of-a-kind visual atmosphere that is unique to all our restaurants.

Nitin Mehra is a certified Sommelier and Red Seal Chef, trained at both Algonquin College and Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. He is the Executive Chef of the East India Company Restaurants. Nitin’s ability to seamlessly fuse treasured family recipes with contemporary cuisine is exemplified in all our menu selections. Nitin has also led the family in the development and sales of the East India Company line of ready-to-cook Sauces.

Throughout the years, we’ve been very fortunate to have some of the most dedicated and hardworking core staff that allows us to do what we do best. We’re honoured every single day to work alongside Chef Ramesh Badoni, Chef R.K. Tiwari, and Assistant Manager & Sommelier Bernard Joseph Lemoyne. Together, we would like to invite you to experience the dynamic essence that India is known for.

One of my favourite restaurants in Winnipeg. I love the buffet. Great choices, great taste. I always leave very satisfied. Service is always great and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the family who owns the restaurant multiple times and they are lovely people who really know how to treat guests.

Best Indian food in the city! Our group of 9 (with 3 kids) came for my wife’s birthday celebration. Blown away from the moment we walked in. Service was outstanding, and buffet selection phenomenal with salads, mains, all the fixings and desserts. Owner, Sach went out of his way to ensure our table had everything we needed and made us feel like family. Nothing overly spicy for the first timers in our group, and they loved it. For me, I added their house hot sauce to kick it up a notch and cooled things down with their raita. Everything made in house, including their cheese! 5/5 for sure, don’t miss out! Highly recommend! We will be back. ?

Recommend to us by the now finished Where to Eat in Canada, East India Company has such a delicious India buffet. I've had some of their food in Ottawa (their only other two locations), but I was so blown away here. Every single item was perfectly cooked and mouth-wateringly tasty. The service was excellent and they were clearly super excited to be welcoming back long-missed regulars. Highly recommend. The fish bhaji were such a surprise and SO DELICIOUS.

Environment is really good, authentic indian halal buffet, service is really good. Taste of the food is really authentic. Dessert items are really good. Specially the coconut one. Chicken tandoori has special taste here. But most of the foods has average taste such as daal makhni, palak paneer etc. But above all this one is the best indian halal buffet in winnipeg

One of the best place in Winnipeg to eat Indian food. It is one of the oldest restaurants in the city and offer lavish buffet options to diner. I ordered lentils and rice for the day. The food is really good as the owner knows the species well. They are selling species also. The ambiance is nice and has rich heritage feel. Had brief interaction with the owners and found them nice and courteous.

I can't believe I've never reviewed these guys before. YEARS ago when I lived elsewhere my brother took myself and our parents here after I returned from a trip to a India. I couldn't believe how delicious it was but I had only been in a India 3 months, so I was no Indian food connoisseur. Shortly thereafter I decided to return to India and then unexpectedly STAYED because I met the love of my life (Indian) and we remained there 5 years. When we returned to Canada, I DID consider myself a connoisseur! ? And obvs the husband is, too! We've been to loads of Indian restaurants in this city and this is the one we continue to return to. Authentic taste. Authentic design. Huge buffet selection. And they even let our kids sit on the marble lions for pictures. Price for kids is super reasonable. Their age + 0.95. And the owner, who has been there most of the times we've gone, is a super friendly, genuine guy. Treats each guest like they are important. This place is a win every time!
