Dr. Roderick T. Chew, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

I have visited this doctor once and was shocked by the customer service this doctor provides. I am sure he is qualified as a doctor however the abrupt, inattentive and annoyed attitude of this specialist leaves a patient questioning the reasoning behind this person choosing a profession of a doctor in the first place.

I had an appointment last week, no wait and Dr. Chew was polite and helpful. He explained clinical information in detail without being overly complex. He also mentioned how to book follow up appointments without any prompting.

Dr. Chew made a stressful ordeal into a very happy experience. He was very friendly and helpful from guiding me to my appointment at LGH and most sympathetic and gentle at my hand operation explaining everything. The post operation followup was smooth and my hand is now completely recovered from the injury. A great sympathetic kind doctor.

Obviously I was expecting too much, after hand picking this Doctor to see, and waiting three months to hear from them, and finally, being there, early, of course, for an appointment that was late, of course, undaunted, I entered my room cheerfully confident that a good doctor was going to fix a minor problem with a small tear to a muscle sheath in my forearm, that would enable my otherwise stopped world (I am a painter/artist who cannot keep grip of her paintbrush ) :(. But, things were immediately wrong. The doctor, was rushed, seemed bored, and spoke over me every time I tried to tell him, how this was impacting my life. He belittled my pain and discomfort by repeating seven times, in 10 minutes, that, he had never heard of someone complain that a tear in the sheath of a muscle was bothersome, meanwhile, there is my hand, visibly cramping and contorting every time I bring it towards me. Also was informed many times, that he has never fixed a fascia and, that he would not be closing this one, but rather would open it up more. Might fix it, might not, and, why don't I go back to my surgeon who worked on my thumb, four years ago?huh Rude, short, unsympathetic, mentioned to him, that I have three autoimmune deceases, which often work against my healing, and that I have had more than six organs removed from Lupus,...and cancer three times, trying to explain to him how much of my life has been taken away, and that all I am asking for is an arm, that can hold a paintbrush. Instead, he again spoke right over me, ...and, I was not blabbing, just a few short sentences that I thought would be of importance to a doctor considering surgery on my arm. Again, I am left with feeling disgusted with our entitled doctors, their 10 minute appointments, and dismissive attitude.

Amazing experience. Dr. Chew is so kind and helpful and I’m very thankful to be in his care. He is great at explaining all the options and finding what is best for the patient. Turned a fractured hand into a positive experience. I can’t say enough good things about him and should you find yourself in his care consider yourself lucky :)

Although my file went missing for almost two years - I thought it was taking that long to get into surgery as we're in BC - once I shared with my MD that it seemed abnormally long, they followed up. Within a day, Dr Chew called me with sincere apologies, and a surgery date within two weeks. Day surgery at LGH went well, with Dr Chew and his surgical team warm, confident and very kind, during what seemed to be a busy day for them. He called the next day to ensure I was recovering well, and asked that I follow up immediately with any concerns. The surgery went well, I am pleased and will now see him for a new cyst. I highly recommend this talented surgeon, from consultation to surgery and post.
