Stories tell us that along time ago, Mkwa took care of the first Anishinaabe children, fed them and kept them warm. Another story tells us that each year during Mkwa Giizis or Bear Moon also known as February, bear cubs venture outside their cozy dens to play. If their play is brief, then winter will be long. If they stay out, then spring is fast approaching.

The bear is known as a healer and peacekeeper who taught our people about the medicines. Some of our people have bear names like Mkoons (Little Bear) or Mko-kwe (Bear Woman). Some of our people belong to the Mkwa Dodem (Bear Clan). Some people have bears as "spirit helpers."

Seeing a bears in a natural setting like out in a field or crossing the road somewhere is an exciting and memorable experience. However, this is not necessarily so in a campground or on someone’s deck. This is why we built garbage depots, purchased recycling bins and closed our dump. In doing so, we have given responsibility to our campers and visitors to help us keep bears safe. Bear is called The Rememberer because Bear always remembers where to find food.

Help us protect our bears and all other critters who share their world with us.

  1. Store food in your vehicle at night.
  2. Take your bagged garbage to the Garbage Depot every evening.
  3. Do not scrap your leftover food into the fire pit or around your campsite
  4. Wash out your recyclables before putting them into the bins.
  5. Keep your campsite clean.
  6. Day visitors please take your garbage and recyclables with you.

Our Park attendants will be around to encourage your continued assistance in keeping bears safe.

Love this place. The campsite we had was breath taking views of Sydney Bay. So clean and friendly. Beach has lots of room.

Beautiful Campsite! My second time there. Big sites, they accommodate RV's if that's your jam. Showers are clean, with hot water (bring a few loonies). Bathrooms are also pretty clean. Town with a grocery store, vet, and hardware store pretty close by, in case you need anything. Really, nothing negative to say. Wish I could have stayed longer!

This is a campground has a great location, where you'll be by the water and have great views. However, there were still a few drawbacks primarily the washrooms. The washrooms are gross. At the main washroom area where we can shower, the men's side only has 1 shower that seems to function whereas the other one has the lights off. There are a ton of spiders and I don't think the showers are ever washed. You also need to pay a loonie for 5 minutes (which isn't too bad). The washrooms near our campground by the beach were gross. They had flies everywhere and the stalls were not well maintained. Our camp site was clean but very small. There wasn't much room for privacy and you can see your neighbors very clearly. There also lacked trees so we were unable to setup our tarps.

We had beachfront campsites and it was stunning! The closest washrooms were the porta potties but they were kept very clean; however, there are running toilets available a short walk away. The Bruce trail cuts through the camp at several points which made for some stunning hikes. Overall, we had a great time and we would highly recommend. Can’t wait to go again!

Beautiful. Lovely hiking, biking, camping and gorgeous view of the bay. Friendly and accommodating staff. Some Electric sites are very close.

We stayed in the cabin for a week. The staff were really nice and the campground was kept clean. The only complaint I had were the amount of ear wigs inside the cabin. I know we are outside and bugs are to be expected but there were hundreds in our bags and suitcases!! But overall it was a really fun experience and we would go again, maybe this time with some raid!

We had never been here before and we booked online so we were not sure what to expect but we were not disappointed. This camp ground is beautiful! There is not a ton of privacy between campsites. We were able to book a waterfront site, and it was perfect. We had a full size camp site that ended at the water. This was extra perfect seeing as the camp ground had nightly fireworks on display at the beach. We were able to view the fireworks from our site. There was not a sound at night, except for the sounds of nature! The washrooms were pretty standard. There were some cob webs and flying bugs but the toilets and sinks were clean and supplies were stocked. We saw the staff in cleaning the washrooms so that was a relief during a pandemic. The water is perfectly clear, but cold as you would expect at Georgian Bay. The river bottom is lined with river rock, which is WAY better than mud! There were lots of other park amenities that we did not make use of on our one night stay. Can't wait to come back here in the future!

Read other reviews and wonder if I was at the same place! But I think there's huge differences between the trailer grounds near the entrance and the Beach camping area, where I was staying, in a tent. So, Beach camping. Sounded wonderful. By a beautiful lake. BUT, eerie empty. When I came on a Friday (mid-May), there were three trailers. On Sunday, there was one. On Monday, my little tent was the only one on the entire grounds! The nearest trailer grounds were maybe 2km away... The campsite wasn't clean: there were plastic cutlery, old socks melted into the ground , etc - clearly it had been there forever and no one had driven by to take a look. It was an electrical site, but none of the connections were working. I walked to other sites (hey, there was no one there!) and used theirs. An (empty) bee nest under one cover! I mean, no one cares for the place, there's no proper maintenance. Oh, and last - there were NO BATHROOMS or running water! Yes, there were facilities by the entrance to the park, but that's like 5min drive. But nothing other than a porta-potty about 200m from my site. Yeah.. beautiful sunrises but still, would never return. Too bad the place isn't cared for - it's got great potential. In the meantime, I'll continue staying in provincial parks.
