Nobody cleaned the apartment before we moved in, lots of ants, mice in the walls, renovators didn’t clean up. Fire alarms are faulty and no one cares

I lived in these buildings for 12 years, and have very little good to say about the experience. The first year of our lease was fine. The building managers at the time were responsive, friendly, and genuinely good people. But after that first year, everything changed. The competent building managers were replaced by a couple who ran the place like their own little fiefdom β€” they'd show up at your door on the second of the month demanding rent in cash, they'd make threatening phone calls in response to work orders, blamed long-needed repairs on new tenants... and Homestead didn't care about the MOUNTAINS of complaints against them because they saved them money β€” never spent a dime on the place. And the current building managers are just as frustrating to deal with as the last. They refuse to address severe issues in units like moulding windows, loose carpet, chipping floor tiles... and while we could never prove it we had several instances where we're certain that one of the on-site managers was letting himself into our unit and pawing through our stuff, primarily our electronics and our dresser drawers. That same Homestead employee also started rumours around the building about my "anger issues", going so far as to suggest to tenants that I was abusing my wife, after he and I had a confrontation about his lack of attention to work orders and his general behavior around the property. Then there's the laundry list of more mundane issues: it was always a hassle getting our rent receipts each year, the parking situation is horribly mismanaged, the elevators bring you to the wrong floor about 40% of the time and will remain at the parking level for a solid minute and a half after being called before moving (despite being retrofitted over the course of 2021, which resolved precisely none of the issues with them), the building locks have been in desperate need of some WD40 for about six years, the automatic/wheelchair devices aren't strong enough to move the doors and are non-functional at least half the time, the pool (pre-COVID, obviously) is poorly cleaned and opened/closed each day seemingly at random, management puts absolutely zero interest or effort into either COVID or leash policies and there are plenty of tenants who abuse this lack of enforcement... I could go on but there's a character limit on these reviews. I mean this with utmost sincerity: avoid these buildings unless you have no other choice, especially with what they're charging in rent now. The unit I've just vacated is going to be rented at more than DOUBLE what I was paying, which for the quality of this building and it's management should be criminal.
