About Autism Edmonton (Autism Society Of Edmonton Area)

Rosemanie James

Lead Social Architect

1. What does acceptance mean to you?

Acceptance to me means no particular individual is excluded from any curricular activities. To be accepted is to be acknowledged, welcome, and to be respected, despite our differences.

2. What’s your favourite holiday?

My favourite time of the year is Christmas. I love when all my family members are able to pause their busy life routines and travel whatever distance they may, in order for all of us to gather and be together. Life can often be super hectic and for all of us to come together and have that chance to catch up it’s beyond magical and very heartfelt. I love the snow, the lights, and the bright spirits that everyone seems to carry.

3. Who’s in your village?

My village consists of many wonderful beings. I have two sets of parents and two different families. My friends, my acquaintances and many strangers are significant contributors to my village. Each has impacted me in many ways. Their impact varies; depending on the stages of my life.

4. Why did you join Autism Edmonton?

Autism Edmonton was recommended to me by my friend Cameryn and because I love working with kids, I knew this job would be amazing. Being a part of Autism Edmonton is magnificent. I’m always excited to work, I look forward to the new things the kids will teach me. So far, I’ve managed to learn a bit of sign language, and a significant amount on Mario Kart... This job enables me to be creative, empathetic, and patient. I leave each shift with a smile and await my coming shifts with excitement.

5. What is your favourite book, author or movie?

My favourite movies are The Dark Knight and The Joker. I believe these two movies are perfect depictions of our society. We get the standpoint of the superhero as well as the villain. My next statement may be a bit too bold to state, but I believe by having both standpoints, viewers can remove their biases and really take the time to understand each character and their flaws. After viewing The Joker; we can recognize that he’s not ideally a villain, he’s just an individual who’s been severely misunderstood by his village. Similar to our society; when we remove stereotypes and stigmas, we grant individuals a chance to be their complete selves in a safe environment. More often than not, most individuals we perceive as “bad”, “abnormal” are okay individuals. We as a society have gotten too comfortable with judging a book by its cover and settling for outer appearance. We should be curious and seek what truly lies within each and every one.

I've only been there for the Partners with ASD Support Group monthly meetings, which are always well-led and helpful. This place is great - serves a huge need in this community.
