Instructor Bio: Authentic Jiu Jitsu is led by Professor Ben; a second degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under fourth degree black belt Josh Russell. Benjamin’s passion for the grappling arts led him to Gracie Barra Calgary (currently JR Academy) in 2007 to learn the “gentle art”. While studying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Ben also graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree in education (master of teaching program) and has worked in Alberta as a public school teacher. Ben is adept at blending his professional knowledge of teaching with his extensive experience in Jiu Jitsu to create an environment that is enjoyable, challenging, and designed to optimize the potential of all students.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)? Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport and self-defence system that focuses on grappling skills such as throws, takedowns and ground fighting. The “gentle art” was built on the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger opponent. This can be achieved by using proper technique, leverage and most importantly taking the fight to the ground and applying a dynamic range of joint locks and choke holds.
What Programs are Offered at Authentic Jiu Jitsu (AJJ)? Authentic Jiu Jitsu's schedule includes fundamental skill development classes, advanced (competition) training sessions, no-gi grappling classes, private lessons, women’s only instruction, and weekly “open mat” times for members to utilize the mat space at the academy for drilling technique and/or rolling (grappling). At Authentic Jiu Jitsu we take pride in providing members a dynamic selection of classes that all operate in a welcoming, safe, and clean environment.
What Kind of Experience Does Authentic Jiu Jitsu (AJJ) Provide? Authentic Jiu Jitsu offers technical and authentic instruction for all ages and all walks of life. AJJ members train for a variety of reasons such as: competition, self defence, enhancing physical fitness, building confidence and life skills, making new social connections, and most importantly, fun. β β β β β I had the pleasure to train at AJJ during my semester abroad in Calgary. Professor Ben is a really likeable instructor who teaches a technical and smooth way of BJJ. I especially appreciated the fact that he cares a lot about his students not to injure each other.
The classes focus on a specific situation for several units and it is not just random every time you go. Techniques get explained in detail and there is a lot of room for repetitive practice of those. With all that said, I was able to improve my Jiu-Jitsu game fast and sustainable in the short period of time I stayed in Calgary.
The facility is very clean and new. Everyone I met was truly nice and welcoming. I think it is a suitable place for beginners as well as leisure and competitive BJJ athlets.

There are a lot of great options in Calgary, but AJJ really stood out to me given the welcoming and family oriented community, the extremely clean environment, and the attention to detail and safety Professor Ben teaches with. I have been attending AJJ to train and help coach 3-4 times a week on average for the last few years and have always felt that it is easily the best place to learn jiujitsu in a safe, clean and welcoming environment.
