FAQ’s Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a dietician on staff to assist with special diets?

All AgeCare Communities have a dietitian consultant available to regularly review our menus and their nutritional values. For a special dietary need, the dietitian assesses the resident’s requirements and recommends a prescribed diet, following-up regularly to ensure the special diet program is meeting the resident’s needs.

How qualified is your staff?

All AgeCare Communities meet or exceed the industry-regulated requirements. Our community will have a Director of Care, and we maintain access to a host of health specialists and therapists. Our resident aides have all completed a course in residential care through a recognized college as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Health Care Aide (HCA). Most locations also have a Recreation Therapist on staff and appropriate staffing to assist with that role.

How do you welcome new residents?

AgeCare Communities operate on the principle of providing our seniors with quality personal care in a “home-like” surrounding. Our friendly staff readily recognizes new residents and they make a point of introducing themselves and their service responsibilities. We all strive to make new residents feel that they are truly welcomed to their new home!

What should my family member bring?

We encourage families to make their choices wisely. Bring those items that will make the room as welcoming as possible. Also, find that balance between “favourite things” and clutter. In some locations, residents bring their own furniture, so be sure to check the room dimensions for an idea of what will fit.

Residents are responsible for providing their own clothing and personal toiletries. Personal items like TVs, stereos and computers are also popular among residents. We also recommend artwork, which add welcoming personal touches to the rooms.
How does someone get in to an AgeCare community?

It varies from province to province. In Alberta, for example, it starts with an assessment of an individual’s needs in regards to the level of support they require. Once this is complete, Alberta Health Services – Transition Services, sends the information to the community. The Director of Care (who is a Registered Nurse) reviews the information and makes an offer for a room, if one is available and if that community is able to safely and securely care for the resident.

How do you welcome new residents?

AgeCare Communities operate on the principle of providing our seniors with quality personal care in a “home-like” surrounding. Our best references are our residents, and each facility has a Resident Welcoming Committee to make our new residents feel completely at home with their new friends. Our friendly staff readily recognizes new residents and they make a point of introducing themselves and their service responsibilities. We all strive to make new residents feel that they are truly welcomed to their new home!

What type of outings do you offer your residents?

Aside from regularly scheduled trips to the malls, bowling alleys, or just to go out for tea, occasionally arranged excursions to the museum or other municipal attractions and special events (parades, fairs, concerts) are featured. The recreational coordinators for each facility talk to the residents about their interests and organize activities around their response. The result could be a simple ride into the country or a picnic in a park.

Are pets allowed?

Pets are allowed in many locations, subject to approval. Residents with pets are required to sign a “pet care contract” undertaking to provide all the care and responsibility for their pet. We always encourage families and friends with pets to bring them for visits, but we also maintain pet-free zones.

What type of furniture can residents bring?

Please strive to make your new home as comfortable as possible. Typically residents bring a dresser, chair, TV and/or Stereo, small plants and their own pictures. Personal bedding and other nice touches make it really feel like home.

What should be brought for clothing?

This might be a good time to evaluate your current wardrobe. Really look at each piece and make sure you still wear it, otherwise, it will just take up valuable space in your closet. We suggest bringing one week’s worth of clothing as we do laundry on a daily basis. It is also important to bring good seasonal wear, as we do offer outings and outdoor programming within our courtyards. Remember to pack your hats, for both winter and summer.

What is moving day like?

This is a big day. You may be able to set up your room in advance, which you can coordinate with the staff prior to moving day. Please expect to arrive mid-morning, and give yourself plenty of time to complete paperwork and other things that require attention on the first day. We recommend that you have family stay with you, if possible, during those first few hours in your new home.

I made the decision to move my mother to Age Care Glenmore 14 months ago from out of province. It was a tough decision but a good one. Mom passed away recently but I am blessed our family was able to spend time with her as well as the exceptional and compassionate care she received from the entire staff at Glenmore. From the head nurse for the wing to all the people who assisted her in her time of need. From the people who brought her drinks and cookies at night to the people who made her smile and sang to her......thank you from the bottom of my heart

Our family is very fortunate that our mother was able to move into Age Care Glenmore. She enjoys attentive care, tasty meals, and as many activities as she can attend. The residents enjoy outings and a good amount of live entertainment as well as engaging occupational therapy with Charmaine and Simon. Mom has her hair shampooed and set weekly in the salon, as was her routine when she lived at home. Mom has made new friends through programs such as knitting club, bingo, and trivia to name a few. There is even a happy hour! All the staff has made the effort to get to know mom and greet her by name as she makes her way through the halls. The physio department is diligent in encouraging mom to walk and maintain some mobility. As mom is at risk of falling, my greatest appreciation is that she is in a safe environment. It is never an easy adjustment to leave your home for facility living. Mom has adjusted well and happily tells me, when I visit, everything she has done.

Our mother moved into AgeCare Glenmore two years ago. The transition was very difficult for Mom and the family. I believe this is normal under the circumstances. However, her care has been excellent. Our mother is 99 and continues to be cared for gently and lovingly by the staff. Many of the staff are good, but most are excellent. They treat her with respect and give her dignity. Not only do the staff always call her by name, but most staff take the time to learn our first names as well (5 children). I have monitored the food and found it to be very good. The building is well maintained and extremely clean. The social areas are excellent. We recently hosted her 99th birthday at AgeCare with over 100 guests. The staff were amazing in supporting our needs. I believe it is impossible to please everyone in this type of living. Demands on staff are very high, but response from staff is almost always with a smile. Mom initially had transition struggles to living at AgeCare but quickly settled in and is very content. All 5 of her children are very pleased to have her at AgeCare Glenmore. We all agree, including Mom, it is the best place for her.

Our Mom went in to the Age Care Glenmore Centre (Beverly Care Centre) last year due to dementia and a stroke. Having to go through Transition Services for Long term placement, we (the family) felt that Age Care Glenmore was our best option at the time. We are happy to say we have no regrets! Mom is being taken care of very well. From what we have observed, she is treated with respect and dignity. The care giving staff have Mom’s health and safety at heart. When we are visiting they will come and say hello to Mom (and us), but they talk directly to Mom. They often can get a reaction like a smile, when we cannot, and we don’t think Mom would smile if she wasn’t taken care of properly. Over the year if there have been any concerns the staff have remedied or responded to the concerns right away. The care and attention provided by the nursing staff, the aides, the food and nutrition staff, recreation staff and the extended care giving family at the centre has been wonderful. It is very comforting to know that Mom is in good hands. Thank-you!

My mom has been in this facility for about 9 months and she loves it. The staff is friendly, it’s is bright, there are so many places to visit, the gardens are great in the summer, my mom likes the gym and she says the food is great. My dad was in a different nursing home in the NE for 11 years and my mom was in another facility before AgeCare and this is by far the best. It’s clean and they have taken excellent Covid 19 measures.

In a COVID world, one would think that they would up their care. Nope. And my review has nothing to do with Covid. It's about our Dad who has always been fun and friendly. Until he lost his brand new dentures and not so new glasses. No one told me for over a week. I sent them the definition of care. They might need some education. The lack of care is older than the home. If you are considering this place, run as far as you can.

If you care for your loved ones do not consider agecare glenmore. The quality of care is poor - there were numerous times when my father pressed his call button multiple times for help and the nurses/health care aids took more than 15 minutes to come and check on him. My father deteriorated dramatically and quickly after being moved into glenmore (in the span of 2 weeks he went from walking short distances to being bed ridden/requiring an electric lift to get out of bed/having numerous contusions and broken teeth from various falls). They tried to convince me to change his goals of care so that they wouldn’t need to call an ambulance for him because “the hospital wouldn’t be able to do anything”. One night he complained of chest pain and instead of sending him to the hospital they attributed it to laboured breathing and put him back in bed. In the morning they found him facedown on the ground and I had to force them to call 9-1-1. We later found out that he had actually had at least one massive heart attack and from then on was basically non-verbal. Workers there left him in his own waste before changing him for hours. Beyond the horrendous care the facility is old and the “double rooms” are definitely rooms that used to be single but were transformed into doubles to bump up their cash flow. I am attaching pictures of the “room” my dad was put in, which was actually a 7x10 foot space (shoebox) without even a view of a window and barely allowed room for a bed, a small nightstand, and his wheelchair. Oh and less importantly, the location is on a very busy street with no street parking which means you are forced to pay for parking each time you want to visit your loved ones. Glenmore was never our first choice but it was the option that became available and I naively thought that the reviews on here were exaggerated. If you are considering glenmore.. just don’t…. Seriously just wait the longer time for another option to become available. I wish I would have waited and kept him in the hospital instead of accepting Glenmore’s bed offer.

I am very, very pleased with the EXCELLENT CARE that my husband is receiving at the Glenmore Age Care Facility. All of the STAFF are very professional, considerate and most helpful. The daily “hands on” care is excellent, he is always shaved, dressed, clean, given opportunities to join activities, he is carefully monitored when needed. I am always consulted about any concerns that the staff…(Dietitian , Social Worker RNs, Doctor, Physiotherapist) may have about his well being. I, also, have noticed the way staff deal with other patients, it is EXCEPTIONAL. The FACILITY itself, is a bit older but really quite lovely and welcoming. (Think old Southern hotel) It is well maintained with ongoing renovations. It is very clean, safe, pleasant to be in with lots of little APPEALING AREAS to sit in. These areas are immaculate. The main foyer has a huge reception area with plants, water fountain and large windows. The individual rooms are large, with lots of the patient’s personal belongings. The rooms have large windows overlooking beautiful garden courtyards. My husband is well cared for, respected, safe and content. Thank you.
