About Wood's Homes | Eastside Community Mental Health Services

Wood's Homes, and its own 100+ year history, is fortunate to be situated upon an ancient and historical place - the traditional territories of the people of the Blackfoot and Treaty 7 Region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuu T'ina and the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, as well as the MΓ©tis Nation of Alberta. This is also the land adjacent to where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet, the place once called Moh'kins'tsis, which is now called the City of Calgary.

We Never Say No. We Never Give Up. We Never Turn Anyone Away.

Wood’s Homes is a children’s mental health centre. We provide treatment and support to children, youth and families with mental health needs.

Founded as an orphanage by Reverend George Wood in 1914, we are a place of caring and trust. A place you can turn to for help when you don’t know what else to do, or when you have nowhere else to turn.

Wood’s Homes is based in Calgary (on three large campuses and in several neighbourhoods across the city) with locations in Lethbridge, Strathmore and Fort McMurray. Our 500 staff and 100 volunteers provide 40+ programs and services for 20,000 children and their families every year.

We are accredited through Accreditation Canada and have earned two Leading Practice Awards, and Exemplary Standing status three times.

Wood’s Homes is nationally recognized for our innovative and groundbreaking services. We are proud of our research in children’s mental health. In 2001, we established a Research Department and in 2016, we launched the Wood’s Homes Research Chair in Children’s Mental Health, in a partnership with the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Social Work. Chris helped me... Maybe all I needed was a good venting and crying session but I felt 10000% better after for sure... I think it's important... Mental health is a thing

Access to free counseling when you need it! Works great for when you can't wait for an appointment with your regular counselor or if you are just having 'one of those days'. You don't get the same counselor every time but so far all of the ones I have had have been great!

Had a horrible experience here. I was laughed at by people behind a two-way mirror for saying I have seen 5 or 6 counselors in the past few years, due to not finding one I was completely comfortable with. Then, I was laughed at again by the woman, whom I was speaking with directly, for saying some friends of mine, who struggled with mental health issues, were effecting me negatively. I was then told by this same woman to just get rid of all the people with any mental health concern from my life. This was the worst "counselling session" of my life. Talk about demonizing and stigmatizing mental illness. This experience happened a number of years ago, so those individuals may not still be working here. It shocks me that it would seem some people would get a degree aimed at helping those with mental and emotional issues and than use it, instead, to make fun of those struggling with mental illness. Truly disturbing.

What I gotta say is the receptionist was very polite, the forms were highly detailed. The one way mirror was a little intimidating at first but knowing there is more than one person helping me get to the bottom of my depression is great. Knowing that there is more than one suggestion for the issues surrounding my depression was greater and more encouraging than given a one word answer. The councillor that was helping me was empathetic, understanding, asked me the right questions and giving me the right suggestions. I recommend this for anyone who needs to seek help right away. Who needs someone to talk to asap.

The set up is interesting here, you go for a single long session where you get multiple professionals feedback. The single sessions are aimed to give you tools to take to your regular life after one session. These services are really important for society and if you are struggling I urge you to speak to someone the only downside of this clinic is the receptionist. She was horrible! Mean and unkind so if you're coming to the clinic in crisis don't take her personally. Hopefully the clinic will replace her because she will harm someone one day.

1 sided doesn’t really help and mostly takes parents side when the parents themselves are the issue. I didn’t get the help I needed despite having issues with suicidal thoughts and such. My experience wasn’t all that good either way and the therapists invalidate your feelings in a way. Either way, if you’re looking for help I suggest going someplace else and not here.
