★ ★ ★ ★ ★ United Way administers the Better at Home Program whose purpose is to help Seniors stay in their home as long as possible. Services range from Housekeeping to Visits to Snow Removal and Grass Cutting. I believe that most Better at Home chapters are probably very good, BUT one is NOT and that is the Fort St, John, BC chapter. United Way of Northern BC was contacted quite some time ago about the Program Coordinator Laura Beamish and the dereliction of duties that occurs in FSJ. However, United Way did nothing about this employee. Laura Beamish has NO accountability. For one, there needs to an audit of the Contracts and the Services provided. For instance, the Grass Mowing Contractor does NOT come on a regular basis (maybe 1 time a month) and he double bills (bills the Senior over $40 for a cut and then bills Better at Home). Laura Beamish does not keep appointments, does not contact clients and has absolutely NO repercussions for her abysmal job performance! There is a general belief that Laura has her favoured clients and she certainly knows which ‘back’ needs scratching in order to appear competent. But, there are many Seniors who are ignored and Laura just doesn’t seem to care. United Way needs to evaluate the Program Coordinator and do a forensic audit! There is not much trust in this Program and United Way because of this Coordinator.
