The Body Shop Store Midtown Plaza Saskatoon
On Mother's Day in May of 1987, after months of waiting for a retail location, Gordon and Maureen opened The Body Shop in Midtown Plaza. They occupied a tiny little spot, just under 400 square feet. Saskatchewan welcomed this unique British retail import, and, at Christmas, people willingly joined the line-up, which extended past other stores to the mall's outdoor exit. Gordon ran up and down the line offering candies, water, or kleenex.
For the Christmas season, in 1988, a kiosk provided extra service for customers and relieved the pressure on the tiny store. In January of 1989, The Body Shop expanded to include what was once The Awl Shop. During construction, a temporary store was set up in a kiosk.
The new store was lovely, and everyone worked hard, had fun, and did good things. Each store volunteered at a community project, got involved in The Body Shop's National and International campaigns, and enjoyed a good laugh.
HISTORY OF FUN:
The Haddocks were astonished to find 50 brassieres displayed on their front lawn the morning Maureen turned 50. The staff from Midtown signed their work, but Myrna Wilson likely spearheaded the shenanigans.
Myrna Wilson, in October of 1989, decided to sew and paint costumes replicating the famous Milk Bath sold at The Body Shop. She made a Milk Bath dress for every staff person, and customers loved the idea.
