About Thunder Oak Cheese Farm
Both Jacob and Margaret Schep come from cheese-making families in Holland. Margaret’s mother was a World Champion cheese maker in 1975. Margaret’s brother and his wife still make cheese on the family farm in Holland.
Jacob and Margaret emigrated to Canada with their children in 1981, and began a dairy farm in Scoble Township, just south of Thunder Bay, Ontario.
At Thunder Oak Cheese Farm, the Scheps bring to Canada the experience and tradition of Dutch cheese-making.
In 2002, Thunder Oak won the Dairy Farmers of Canada Grand Prix award for best Firm Cheese.
In 2007 Walter and Martin Schep purchased Thunder Oak Cheese Farm from their parents. Walter and his wife Joanne run the cheese processing plant while Martin and his wife Charmaine run the dairy farm.

Their shipments across Canada have been a welcomed option when out of town and to send products to others as the perfect edible quality, gift. Their large, airy store is filled with wonderful favorites from the Netherlands as well as other small specialty retailers, making Thunder Oak Cheese Farm, part of a routine market stop rather than a place which is an occasional visit.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I have always liked their cheese products made on site. Lately, however, their cheeses are very dry and their quark tastes bitter. I have discontinued to buy their products and feel I am better off buying from the big stores in town. This is a pity, since I'd love to promote local businesses but not if they compromise with quality.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I had heard that they had good cheese and had checked out their flyer that told of the cheese they make. Gouda is one of my favourites, and I came home with lots of it. It is located in a beautiful area of Ontario and worth the drive to see and enjoy the food they have.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Buy local!!! A huge variety of different flavours of locally made Gouda, all available to sample before you buy! Really different seasonings, some we'd never have thought of for a cheese! Prices are very reasonable. A selection of different types of fresh cheese curds and home made bakery items are available. There's also an assortment of imported Dutch food items including the mighty stroopwaffle - they even have some that are gluten free if that's your thing!
