Walking into the Oxford you would think you were entering a five star hotel. In the centre of the huge lounge area with its smart grey tiled flooring, high ceiling and white walls stands a piano with soft piano music playing in the background. Comfy sofas, marble dining tables, two wall mounted TV screens, a meeting room and tall potted tropical plants are also features, as is a bar area with tea, coffee, juice and snacks being offered throughout the day. Off the spacious corridors located on either side of the lounge are bedrooms with modern hardwood floors containing a bed, chair, nightstand, dresser and wardrobe with their own ensuite washroom. Outside is a stone patio with tables and chairs and lush landscaped garden. This is no hotel, however, but a new type of luxury care home – the only giveaway perhaps that it caters for a special type of client being the ceiling lift and pull cord call bell in each bedroom. The Oxford Senior Care is one of eight care homes owned by The Care Group in the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island. Nestled in a quiet upmarket residential area of Abbotsford, the 84 bed facility reopened after renovation in March 2017. A registered nurse is on site 24/7 along with care aides who attend promptly to the needs of residents. Healthy and nutritious food is provided three times a day by professional chefs in consultation with a dietitian. Recreational activities are also offered ranging from physical exercise sessions to music and artistic: singing, drawing and painting to fun pursuits like bingo and baking. Other services include housekeeping, laundry and a visiting hairdresser once a week. In the words of Jennifer Wright, Director of Care, “the aim of the Oxford is a happy and healthy resident” and it is succeeding! For me personally the Oxford has proved to be a lifesaver going that extra mile to cater for all my care needs. As a 53-year-old Canadian permanent resident stuck in the UK with a neurological condition and limited mobility confining me to a wheelchair, I desperately wanted to return to BC but had specific requirements that most care homes couldn’t or wouldn’t meet. Thankfully I was introduced to the Oxford via A Place for Mom which finds appropriate care facilities for seniors and they provided me with a unique and outstanding respite care package that has exceeded all my expectations. A TV and telephone were put in my room in readiness for my arrival as a foreigner from abroad as I wasn’t able to bring my own. My needs are different to the average resident in terms of bathing and food – at the Oxford I can have a shower every day rather than once a week which is the usual provision and their kitchen cooks me an exceptional vegetarian and pescetarian menu to order. Wine is also purchased on request. The standard of care is superb – better than in any care home I’ve stayed in, the residents are quiet, pleasant and well-behaved, and every single member of staff is friendly and professional. Even the hairdresser is excellent! I can’t recommend the Oxford highly enough and can’t understand why every one of the 84 rooms isn’t filled with a waiting list. Luckily for future residents there are still vacancies. I strongly advise a visit.

I can’t belive this place, as a respected care aide of 7 years I’ve never been through so much stress as working under these people for 4 weeks. They are asking people to do free orientation, telling you it’s mandatory but not paying you. Super illegal, also they don’t pay over time and that’s also against labor laws. They treat their care staff like garbage, doesn’t matter how hard you work you will not be appreciated or respected. The poor residents aren’t cared for as well as they could be because they understaff the care aides and force care staff to cover their own scheduling concerns when sick, find poeple to replace yourself... please stay away, not worth the cost to stay here.

We are really happy bringing our parent here There are a lot of passionate people here working which makes my parent feel home We come to visit often to enjoy the atmosphere And the amazing home style food The food is fresh and super tasty and we often come and enjoy it (especially the turkey lunch on Christmas Day ) Entertainment is also fun and exciting.

Plastic Management only shows they care in the beginning but the minute you leave your love one here they are short staffed. I have seen many residents falling down and not any staff are near by to acknowledge this. Rushed wake ups, violently rushed when not enough time to care for each resident as short staff is available. 2 staff in the night under 40 plus residents. is risky. 4 maybe if they are luck 3-4 in the morning. and 4 in the evening. My Grandmother passed away sadly.

Mom needed a full care facility on short notice due to failing health and the Oxford was our choice from a list of 10 facilities. From the moment we entered, the management paid attention to our needs. They listened, took notes, gave a very detailed tour and welcomed us to phone or come back for further information. The building has been extensively renovated last year and it shows the quality that is throughout the establishment, not only in physical nature but in the staff and the care. The building is bright, open, spacious and decorated in modern tones which eliminates the institutional feel that most buildings have. The baby grand piano is a pleasant touch. We needed a room quickly and the Oxford management was able to fit us in on three days notice. The move in was uneventful and the staff totally involved with mom so that she was made to feel at home right away. Her room, except for the provincially mandated hospital like bed, was bright with two large windows looking out onto the garden and had a homelike feel. There is enough room to bring in some personal furniture which we did. This I believe to be important as transitions to full care should always be made with trying to keep some items of furniture and personal items into the new residence. Mom's needs included personal care issues, mobility issues and medical issues. Within a day the resident doctor paid her a visit, the pharmacy account was set up, and the staff in their respective fields visited to assess and acquaint themselves. The building is very secure and we feel mom is in the right place to handle all of her needs. As she has German heritage, she is even allowed to sing her German polka's during singing hours. LOL (she can't hit all the notes anymore) We will recommend the facility and staff as a place for anyone needed Full care/Complex for a family member.

As a former resident I can say that what Wes Ly and Chrissy say are facts. I was told by two care aides that they were not getting paid for their orientation work at the Oxford. It involved working an extra shift without pay, Wes is right highly illegal and against labour laws. The residents are not always getting the proper care due to a lack of staff, and also glaring mistakes made by inexperienced employees who apparently are related to or friends of the lady doing the hiring. Pass this place by if you want your family members to receive satisfactory care, in my opinion. If you are the owner then I hope you and your new family are doing well, and Otto too, I think that was the name of your golden retriever. I can assure you that I was told by former care aides that they where not getting paid for their orientation training. I can think of no reason why they would lie to me they where very caring and loving people who cared a great deal for their patients. I saw several cases of neglect by two members of the staff, and one of the RN’s informed me when I complained about these two care aides that they were either related to, or friends of the lady who does the hiring. Nepotism rarely leads to satisfactory results, and it was obvious to me, as well as some other residents that this situation was problematic for the care of some of the more incapacitated residents. This same RN has since left the Oxford for employment at a local hospital where she will continue to be an outstanding employee, with considerable experience and knowledge of proper nursing care, in my opinion and others at the Oxford. As well everything I saw her do just confirmed my opinion and other residents also, that she was very caring and thorough. It’s too bad she left, like many of the staff, and as a business person you must be curious as to why there are good staff members leaving for employment elsewhere. You have built a truly beautiful facility for the residents, the surroundings are comfortable and sensible for the good of the residents, it would be proactive to look into the problems mentioned about some of the hiring practices and a very few staff. Most of the staff are trying their hardest to provide the best care they can, but are stretched too far to provide good care for all of the residents. The recreational staff are excellent in keeping all the residents involved in the community of the Oxford, and provide enjoyable and interesting activities for your family members.
