About Sundance Lodges, Kananaskis Country

Sundance Lodges is a privately owned family campground located in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Established in 1989 by Brian and Sheryl Green, Sundance has been a labour of love for decades. After Brian’s passing in 2018, his children, Ryan and Stacia stepped in to run the business with Sheryl.

Sundance Lodges was created and built to focus on giving those families without RVs or the money for expensive hotel rooms the opportunity to go camping for a reasonable price in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Before opening to the public, various elders from southern Alberta were consulted regarding the use, design and painting of the tipi in a respectful way.

When Sundance opened in June of 1992, Brian and Sheryl had the tipis blessed by local elders and began what would become a life long relationship with them. Brian, Sheryl, Ryan and Stacia enjoyed learning more about their culture and history and very much appreciated their support. Today, this relationship is now carried with honour and respect by the second generation. To this day you can find local native handicrafts and learn about the origins of a tipi and its many great features in the Trading Post.

We hope to see you at Sundance Lodges this summer!

We love their Trapper’s tent! We don’t have an RV and trailer to enjoy camping without the hassle of building a tent. We’ve been eyeing Sundance for a few years now, and finally got the chance to try it out last Summer! They also have Tipis (small and large) and you can also bring your own tent. The Trapperβ€˜a tent is big enough to accommodate 6-8 person. It has it’s own kerosene heater, campfire, parking space and covered picnic table. The outhouse washrooms surrounding the campsite is clean and they always managed to clean it regularly throughout the day (not just once a week). There’s so many activities you can do like beach volleyball, bocce ball games, frisbee, trail hikes along the creek and super close to all Kananaskis trails. They have an outpost where you can buy fire logs, coffee, groceries, ice bags, camp tools, toys n books for your kids and other merchandise. Their shower rooms are also well maintained and clean! Hoping to come back next Summer!

A note, this review was made during the 2021 August forest fires and the site was very smoky. The trapper's tent is a very nice change of pace in a camp site. No need to fiddle around with a regular tent, it comes with a heater and electric lantern as well as 4 beds. It also includes a nice area outside of the tent with the picnic table covered by a canvas tarp. My one complaint (other than the smoke which at this present time has made me consider going home early) is the road noise. The site is so close to the main Kananaskis trail road that at all hours of the day and at night there is a constant and loud sound of Cars, trucks and motorcycles going by. It becomes very hard to sleep without earplugs or headphones. Other than that the facilities are very good, showers and running water are avaliable most of the day with a small break in between for the staff to clean. The grounds also provide cell service but no wifi. The fire pits are quite nice but nothing special. One gripe is the lack of potable water. The only source is the main bathrooms with the other water spots being well water which the camp staff warn is not tested as safe for drinking. It's a minor gripe but should be noted. I would also bring bug spray since the trapper tents have a small colony of bugs and spiders. The staff are also very friendly and are keen to offer advice. Overall Sundance lodges is a nice experience but would benefit from being a kilometer or two from the road.

I had a great time staying here and I don't usually like camping. The trappers tent was very spacious and clean and lots of room for the camp lot also. There was a dense forest all around us giving us a little privacy from our neighbors. Bathroom was also clean and had a few stalls for showers. There's also a big open field next to the convenient store where you can play and hang out

Poor booking system, requires you to fill out a bunch of information without the guarantee of reserving a spot. Meanwhile as you are filling out that information someone who can type faster is able to submit a reservation before you for that same site prior to you completing your information.

I had been here before but forgotten what a perfect place this is for families! There are teepee sites and trapper tent sites. I highly recommend the trapper tent sites because it eliminates so much of the struggle that takes place with camping and kids. It gives you more time to have camp fires and walks together. Then kerosene heaters in the tents are most welcome when the temperatures dip a bit and a family of 4 can sleep in them quite easily. The general store has anything you could need as well as wood for $12 a bundle. Each morning the park staff come to fill your kerosene tank and clean the washrooms. In fact the washrooms are kept spotless! The central area to play games and badminton is a fun way of meeting other families. On the final night when there was a rain storm, it was nice to know that we were not going to need to take down a tent in the rain and get soaked! I will make a point of returning here. It is dog friendly here too.

Really enjoyed our stay; roomy prospector tents with front awning and deck; firepit out front; heater kept us warm at night. nice to be able to stand up and move around inside at night. you still bring in all your own supplies but no setup and nice clean accommodations.

Stayed here for 3 nights in a Trappers Tent and it was a great experience. The tent was equipped with a small lantern and gas heater which is filled each day. The gas lasts all night which was good. I liked how the picnic table is covered too as it rained a couple nights there. You bring your own wood or buy from the store. Washrooms were kept very very clean and showers never ran out of hot water (believe it or not!). Highly recommend!

We were offered a free night due to disturbance and decided to take them up on the offer next time we camped there. The trappers tent has 4 beds. Me and my two sons wanted to go but my mother has dementia and cannot be left home alone and we also wanted them to have a chance to get out. Unfortunately they would not allow 4 adults to occupy the 4 beds despite knowing the circumstances.
