About Student Legal Assistance
Student Legal Assistance (SLA) provides free legal information and representation to low-income residents of Calgary and the surrounding area. Operating since 1979, SLA is a non-profit, registered charitable organization that is staffed primarily by current University of Calgary law students. Under the guidance of Executive Director and a team of advising lawyers, student caseworkers are responsible for client intake and file management; all while pursuing their full-time Juris-Doctorate education. SLA’s student team of approximately 100 caseworkers also consists of an elected student executive team lead by Student Director.

β β β β β They have helped me twice in the past. Got me off of some very heavy charges including assault several years ago. They tried to get me off a dui charge as well and did everything they could but unfortunately there wasn't much that could be done. Dui cases are very complex and usually require a very expensive lawyer to get the charge dropped. I'm very satisfied with everything they were able to do for me in the last and am forever grateful. Their work exceeding my expectations especially because they are only students. Their fees are really low. You get more than you pay for here, but if your dealing with something like a serious traffic offense or something complex I'd probably invest in a experienced lawyer.i also appreciate their honesty, they give you a very realistic understanding on what to expect as an outcome.

β β β β β VERY late review on my part, but they (specifically Jessica) worked very diligently and then some to make sure I got the appropriate outcome I deserved, even taking extra time and steps and being very empathetic and accommodating to my tricky situation, I would recommend in a second and I owe them many thanks and wish them success in the future.

β β β β β Although the students themselves are kind and well meaning, diligent and hard working, the truth is, communication with SLA is absolutely terrible. I got shuffled around among students. I never felt heard to listened to. It always felt to me that they were talking about me but never talking TO me, never gathering the facts properly. The secretary is awful, you can hear eyes roll with her flat tone. Though I appreciate the community service that SLA provides, itβs far more about the studentsβ path of learning than it ever is about them saving you. They did the bare minimum needed to do the job. Guess thatβs understandable, given how crammed full their schedules are.

β β β β β If you have legal issues but can't afford to outrageous fees lawyers charge, "Student Legal Assistance" could be the answer for your problems.
I used them years ago after making a dumb mistake. My friend who was arrested with me got charged, and it is now on his criminal record. I paid an extremely low fee (something like $11-$21; although this was years ago so prices may have gone up).
I met with a law-student, who then went to court for me on my behalf, and got the charges dropped.
Give them a call, there's no harm in doing so!
