The ladies of Strathcona Midwifery were very understanding, compassionate and patient. My home birth did not go as I had planned but they respected my decision to go to the hospital, did not make me feel bad about my choice and supported me through the whole birthing experience. The after care was wonderful, they come to your home and check up on you and your new family and really go out of their way to make you feel comfortable.

I'm a bit late writing this review...and apologize to the amazing women at SMC for that, but better late than never! When I got pregnant with my first child, it was a happy accident, and I really had no idea what to do or to expect from prenatal care. I did know that I wanted to be cared for by a midwife, though. So I called around a bunch of places and most were full. Strathcona was still in its infancy, and there wasn't much information about them out there in the googlesphere. But they had space, and I needed a midwife. So we booked our first appointment. I was blown away by the wonderful, caring, attentive women that I met throughout my 6 months of care with them, before baby came along. I had most of my appointments with one of the midwives who ended up moving out of Vancouver just before my baby was born - so I didn't get a chance to get to know the midwife who stepped in much before my due date. But it didn't matter - she was fantastic, and we connected right away. My labour was very long (I'll spare you the details!), but she stayed with us through most of it, and was full of compassion. I eventually had to deliver at the hospital, but my midwife maintained care and was amazing to have with me in that sterile environment. I can't say enough about these wonderful women - I feel so fortunate to have had this wonderful experience and would highly recommend them to anyone.

My first birth was a home birth with another midwifery. In retrospect, there were so many interventions during my labour and many tests during pregnancy were done without informed consent. I felt I was told to just do it, or only told about the benefits without being told all the risks. So when I was pregnant the second time, I chose a different midwifery. It was slightly better, but still, when I said I wanted to decline ultrasound and the standard glucose test, I could feel the mistrust from the midwives. And I was told that even though my diet and my lifestyle completely changed since the last pregnancy, I would still be high risk for gestational diabetes. And furthermore, I was told that since I've been eating so healthily, it would be ok to take that chemical drink. It made no sense to me! Several doulas I spoke to recommended I switch to Strathcona Midwifery. They told me if I want true informed consent and hands-off birthing, that's the place to go. I went in for an appointment with Tia when I was halfway through my pregnancy. The difference was night and day! I felt listened to, and was given some alternatives to drinking the chemical drink for the standard glucose test. And I felt respected and trusted when I declined tests, and I never felt the pressure to justify myself. At the end, I decided to free birth, and I felt trusted and respected for my decision. I had the birth of my dreams and wonderful postpartum care. I can't recommend Strathcona Midwifery enough! If you want true informed consent, feel respected, treated as an equal, and trusted in your ability to make the best decisions for yourself and your baby, and a team who support you in realizing your dream birth, Strathcona Midwifery is the place to go!

This was my 2nd pregnancy and this time I was taken care of by the Huckleberry Team Tia Sarah and Cello (I chose to switch from my OB due to a past traumatic experience). I was taken on later in my pregnancy but they helped me get through all my necessary screenings/appointments etc. Even walked me through my results which OBs don’t really go into detail. Being cared by a midwife during pregnancy makes you enjoy the experience instead of it being super serious and daunting. Tia was with me even though I was a scheduled csection, she was there for me for support which did wonders for me. She informed me and prepared me for surgery, even held me during anesthesia which is a pretty scary moment. She really helped me feel calm, cared for and focused. They made sure I was in great hands for my surgery (referred to Dr. Ubhi) which was considered high risk due to placenta issues. When baby was out , Tia came to see me at hospital even if it was at a different hospital they normally go to. During post partum they came to see me at my home 2/3 times to check on me and baby , also gave me helpful tips on breastfeeding, so thorough and caring I was sad to be dismissed but I’m super thankful I was under their care. Just amazing people , I really appreciate all their efforts and love for what they do. -Lilah Jade Oct 2021

Unfortunately, we had a loss after our first midwife appointment and Kaz was amazing to deal with. She was so kind and empathetic and followed up with me a number of times. She answered all my questions and even said I could call the emergency line if I had questions about whether or not I needed to go to the hospital on my weekend away. I felt so supported during this very difficult time and I really felt less alone because of Kaz. It's one thing for the team to be great during birth but it's another to put so much love an energy during a time of loss. I'm so thankful for Kaz and the team.

Words cannot describe the amazing care provided to my family by these wonderful women. I was 36 weeks pregnant when I decided to change midwifery care and the huckleberry team (Tia, Sarah and Cello) welcomed me in. Best decision of my life! My first appointment I was really scared that I made the wrong decision changing care so late, but met Tia and left the clinic laughing of my worries. It was a world of difference from my previous midwife. Sarah was the one present on my labour and whom I met with a few times afterwards. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! ??? So compassionate, knowledgeable and just overall an amazing human being! Also met Cello a few times, who came to my home twice after birth and took very good care of us! I felt very cared for and very safe. Thank you! ??? My birth experience wasn't exactly how I dreamed of, but for sure was amazing, special and very safe, and I have this wonderful team to thank for!

I am so thankful to the Huckleberry Midwife team at Strathcona Midwifery Collective! Tia, Cello and Sarah went above and beyond to provide amazing and compassionate care to me, my family and my baby. I would highly recommend this team and as an Indigenous person would strongly suggest the Huckleberry team as they worked to ensure I received culturally safe care throughout my pregnancy and in hospital. Mussi Cho Huckleberry Team!

We’ve had the support of Strathcona for the births of all three of our children and I can honestly say that I cannot imagine birthing without them. We were so fortunate to have been in the care of Carolyn and Andrea when bringing our children into this world. Compassionate, knowledgeable, patient centered and grounded - there is a reason why Strathcona is well respected in this city. Our births were not straightforward, and we felt heard and supported throughout the whole process. I regularly recommend Strathcona to my clients, family and friends. Thank you to the amazing midwives for supporting us through the triumphs and challenges in this phase of our lives. We are forever grateful.
