In December of 1999, Stella’s Café & Bakery opened its doors to the Winnipeg market at 166 Osborne Street. The concept utilized the talents and experience of each of the founders, Tore, Lehla, Tomas and Anneen to create a menu and environment focused on in-house baked breads, soups, jam, and sandwiches for dine-in or take-away. Simple, healthy, inspired offerings and friendly service propelled Stella’s to instant popularity. An understated approach and commitment to quality allowed the name of Stella’s to be promoted in the most powerful of manners, by word of mouth. And boy, did everyone like to talk about Stella’s.
With the popularity of the first location, expansion became inevitable and, today, Stella’s operates multiple units in Winnipeg, with plans for further development in Winnipeg and beyond. Stella’s has expanded its menu and number of locations, but has never compromised its core values or commitment to quality.
In 2005, Tomas and Anneen sold all of their interests in Stella’s to Tore and Lehla, in order that they could pursue other opportunities in the Vancouver market. Lehla and Tore remain the driving force behind the company and insist on maintaining all of the same integrity in the business as what has made Stella’s a recognized name for quality and great service.

Food quality: Good
Price per Portion Size: meh!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This was our first time here. We never been to any Stella before and seems like servers were not familiar with someone visiting the restaurant for the first time. We entered the restaurant and were asked immediately what we want at the front door counter. We ordered from the takeout menu which at the time we didn’t know that is a takeout menu and as soon as we ordered we asked the lady if we can sit in the corner. She did not asked if we want to dine in rather she suggested to sit beside the front door. We assumed that it was a self service that is why she asked us to wait until the food is ready. She made the coffee and handed it to us and we again asked if we can sit inside. She said yes. However, when we sat inside another server came to take the order and we told her that we already ordered and will eat inside. Then someone from kitchen came to us to verify if we want the food inside. Let her know yes and she said next time order inside which was little rude as we told at the beginning that we want to eat inside and were never instructed how to do so. They did not offer a plate for the croissant. After they give us the sandwich we asked for water and then they served it. The lady who served us the sandwich was super nice though. Too bad I didn’t get her name. Table was not clean. Always heard nice things about stella from Winnipeg people but had a very disappointing visit.

Local set of restaurants, with this one located on Univ of Winnipeg property.
Offers Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner options. Alcohol is served in addition to takeout and delivery options.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ To start off, the staff is great. They definitely have some cool stuff like the ice coffee and homemade jam. The breakfast is good. I had a club sandwich in the rare occasion we go for lunch and it was super dry...no mayo. My wife loves it here but for me it's always just okay. Because of her, I'll be back lol.

Our waitress was nice and attentive but lost a star for this experience:
Four plus wait staff congregated at a table near us and gossiped about other staff members, argued at a volume that we could hear the entire conversation loud and clear.
Bathrooms were in the building next to the restaurant which you had to be buzzed into

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ As an pilot, I miss having the Stella’s at the airport, but happy to take the walk to this location when I’m staying in the city.
A nice cozy vibe in a lively location in Winnipeg. Friendly service and bottomless coffee compliments this eccentric but interesting menu with a very unique Salmon Eggs Benedict on the list. Hard not to return here for brunch every time!
