About Spartan Steel Ltd
Jack Sommerville, “Big Jack”, as he was known in the Alberta steel business, started out working at the Harlon and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland as a draftsman. Jack immigrated to Canada in the early 1950’s and opened four steel fabrication shops in Alberta in the 60’s and 70’s.
Jack’s passion was always drafting and he was able to see his drawings come to life when he opened Spartan Steel Ltd. in 1976, a 6,000 sq.ft. fabrication shop on 99th in Edmonton. During the early days at Spartan Steel Ltd. they fabricated projects such as the Millwoods Town Center Shopping Mall and portions of the Daishowa Pulp Mill plus many other structural steel buildings in Northern Alberta. Later on, Spartan fabricated portions of the West Edmonton Mall and the U of A Hospital.
