David began his Power Engineering career in 1972 in the power plant of the Castlegar pulp mill. During the 70’s and 80’s, David worked in heating, power and petrochemical plants in western Canada and achieved his BC and Interprovincial First Class Power Engineering certificate in 1985. During the 1980’s David advanced from power plant operations to power plant management. In the 90’s David received a BCIT Diploma of Technology in Operations Management and attended Simon Fraser University in pursuit of his Executive MBA.

David has international experience both managing power plant operations and working as a project engineer. In Indonesia, he was operations and maintenance superintendent, where he recommissioned the power plant of a rayon mill to design standards and kept safety a #1 priority. In Australia, he worked as a project engineer designing and building the power plant for the world’s first 100% effluent-free pulp mill. In Taiwan, he was a project engineer on the construction, commissioning and start-up of a 1,320 Megawatt coal-fired power station that met the very stringent California pollution control standards.

David returned to Canada in the early 2000s and joined UBC as the Chief Power Engineer, where he managed a staff of 33 power engineers and tradesmen. David is also the founder of the Metro Vancouver Chief Power Engineers Association and continued his involvement with the BC Institute of Power Engineers (BCIPE), serving as its 1st Vice President in 2008. During 2006 and 2008, David was employed as a Boiler Safety Officer for BC Safety Authority (BCSA). In 2009 David co-founded Ecomizer Consulting Group Inc and worked with many industrial and commercial clients in western Canada to bring superior performance to their power plant operations.

While on assignment in 2012, David developed a strong interest in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP). David has always been a maverick among Power Engineers. His passion is bringing new innovative, entrepreneurial and safe approaches to Power Plant Operations Management. David has retired as an officer and director from SolarSteam in January 2022.
