About Sibbald Lake Provincial Campground

There are no laws prohibiting the use of metal detectors in the public areas of provincial parks as long as the activity isn’t interfering with the enjoyment of the other park visitors, breaking any of our other regulations, or in any way threatening any of the wildlife in the park.

Metal detectors can be used in the province’s parks, provided that:

  • They are only used on beaches and similar disturbed areas (where digging will not affect the natural ecosystem/habitat). In disturbed areas that are being excavated under a research permit, these areas are closed-off from the public to prevent recreational digging
  • No historic resources are damaged or removed
  • No items are removed from the park
  • All items of value (historical or monetary) are turned over to the local park office
  • They are used for recreation and not for commercial purposes
  • Their use doesn’t violate other laws, such as interfering with a person’s quiet enjoyment in the park. People operating metal detectors are encouraged to use an earpiece/headphones to reduce the likelihood of the noise disturbing others.

As in the case of other park users, a person can expect to encounter officers who will inquire about the activities being conducted and require them to identify themselves and their occupation.

In order to dig for historical resources, a person requires an excavation permit issued by the Parks Division under the Historical Resources Act; this permit is associated with archeological or paleontological research permit. In some locations the excavated items are likely to remain in the park for research and storage; in situations where an excavated item is to be removed from the park, a collection permit is required.

I almost don't want to post this review because I don't want others to know how much of a hidden gem this campground is, haha! We stayed here for the first time in mid-July and just had the best time. Initially, we had a site that was very close proximity to our neighbors and long story short, we had to seek out another site. The campground managers were incredibly understanding, accommodating and friendly. We also walked around the campground and noted the many sites that were treed in and fairly private - we must've just been unlucky with our first choice as there isn't pictures on Reserve.AlbertaParks.ca. Love the beach/lake area as well. Can't wait to come back here again and again!

The campground is nice, it gets a bit noisy as lots of people have huge party's. It is not uncommon for a camp site to have 20+ people visit during the day. We walked around the loops and seen 20+ sites like this even during COVID restrictions. The road is gravel to get in and not maintained. The loops in the campground have BIG pot holes. There are some nice hikes around the campground.

Nice sites, close to the water where you can swim, fish or paddle board. There is no drinking water around so make sure to bring enough, there is also no cell reception which we really enjoyed. The caretakers are so nice, they sell fire wood. Toilets are open despite Covid-19, there is always toilet paper and hand sanitizer but it doesn't hurt to bring your own.

Beautiful little lake and excellent tenting sites... flat ground with lots of tree cover. It looses a star because the campground managers do not come around with wood and only sell it from 4-5 and 7-830pm. It gets very congested in the managers area during the firewood sale hours. So don't burn all your wood at night if you want a breakfast or lunch fire the next day. Cows may wonder through your campsite

Love this place very much. It's my second favorite campground. The only thing i dont like is the rough road going there but thats not even against the campground itself lol they have big sites that are well-treed and with good distance between each other. The night sky is perfect because it's really dark. The outhouses are clean on every time i was there. No network so thats a plus for me. The area with network is about 15mins drive from the site towards hway1. Very close to calgary too about 45mins from downtown.

Along HWY 68 in autumn the yellow leaves are glowing in the morning sun creates a very beautiful landscape. There's gravel road about 10 km, cars traveling both way make a huge cloud of dust. Also, live stock on the road so drive cautiously. Sibbald lake is small but you can find a quiet place here.

No service, no power, the way camping should be. We camped here for three nights, very quite after midnight. Very dark, perfect for Milky Way sighting. Lots of tall tress and big clean sites for tent camping.

2021: my family and I spent a couple nights here. I love how they have a park!!! The campsites were clean and the outhouses weren't to bad. We will camp here again !
