The staff is very difficult to contact and often don't seem to have a clue about their responsibilities. I live out of town and trying to contact my brother who lives their is hard. I suspect a management issue as the staff seem qualified but uninspired to do what they are capable of.

The staff here are wonderful and cared for my dear Auntie for years till her recent death due to advanced Alzeimers. They were always gentle, respectful and kind to her. I can't say enough good about the "team" here. Thank-you.

One star is one too many, I would give zero stars if I could. My Dad died in this house of horrors. The only consolation for me around his death was that he is now totally free from the constant pain, over-drugging, neglect and abuse that he was living daily. After a couple of months at Selkirk Seniors "Village" my Dad became very dazed and confused, he was noticeably drugged into a trance like state. It very much interfered with his ability to eat which was a huge concern. I mentioned to the nurse that he seemed unusually drugged up as I wasn't able to communicate with him properly in weeks. The nurse said nothing had changed in his medications. Dad seemed in pain all the time and he was always trying to lean out of his wheelchair. The care aides told us that he needed a tilting chair, that his current chair was causing his pain. We got a loaner chair from the Red Cross but they refused to put him in it. The tilting chair sat there for weeks and they wouldn't let him have it. Seeing him in so much pain, we went out and got him his own reclining wheelchair. Once he was finally put in reclining chair it seemed like he was in even more pain. I witnessed many times how they would just violently shove my Dad back into his chair and he would cry out in severe pain. I knew something was very wrong with this place. They had been lying about the chair being the source of his pain as we found out a few days later that he had catheter folio area sores and untreated bedsores that had become infected. He was taken to hospital where we found out about the lies about the new medications that they were giving him causing him to be spaced out and making it almost impossible to eat a full meal. We saw how extremely emaciated he had become. The hospital spent weeks getting Dad better and days before he was discharged I called SSV, as they never answer phone calls, I left a message stating the Dad was going to be going home in the near future. I mentioned the issues that we had with the care that he was receiving such as the untreated infected bedsores, not treating the pain associated with his wounds, the physical abuse of shoving him around in his chair, the lies about the chair causing pain, the lies about the medications he was given, inappropriate staff comments and behavior, the negligence of Dr. Michael Vaughan and the nursing staff. When Dad was discharged back to SSV they clearly did not want him back. They thought he wouldn't make it and were disappointed when he did. He was eating, drinking, talking and laughing but they decided to make him palliative anyways. When I openly disagreed with their assessment, they called me into the GM's office and scolded me. I was treated in a very abusive and threatening manner. Katelynn Gould, the vile woman who runs this place, complained to me angrily that the hospital didn't let them know Dad was coming home and they just dropped him off without notice. I reminded her I made it known to them. It was obvious they didn't want Dad back as he was not a money maker for them. Ms Gould then proceeded to tell me that I am too stupid to know anything about the situation that I am going through so she decided to explain her version of what had happened during events she was not present for and she explained to me what was said in conversations that she was not privy to. It was totally ridiculous, none of it was actually true and I had to agree with everything that she said or I would be banned entirely from SSV, my Dad would die there and I wouldn't be able to see him before he died. Later the doctor called and said what they tormented me for saying - that my Dad was not palliative as he was indeed eating and responsive. By this time, I knew without any doubt that they would not facilitate his life there anymore no matter how much improvement we saw. He was not lucrative for them and they were about to close a big deal. 2 weeks later he did pass away. Thankfully he is free now and finally away from abusive, neglectful people and all of the pain and suffering that they caused him.

If you are placing a loved one into a private pay bed at SSV, read the contract VERY CAREFULLY especially item 8. It requires a resident or his/her family to give 30 days notice of vacating the room. This is impossible to do if you are waiting for a subsidized bed (you only have 48 hours to accept an offer) or if your loved one passes away while occupying a private pay room. Rent is approximately $7000 for a 31 day month. A security deposit of $3375 is also required at the time of admission. You only get a prorated amount of rent back if they are able to rent the room to someone else after it is vacated. In my case I only get 9 days rent back (no cheque received yet) and my security deposit is still in limbo. Care at SSV on my husband's floor was good once his CPAP issues were sorted out (3 months after admission). I had to contact Retirement Concepts head office in Vancouver to get action. My impression of most of the Management Team at SSV was negative. Most of the time they don't return phone calls or answer emails.

First off, I have never written a review before so bear with me if I’m doing this wrong. I was compelled to write this because of how very uniquely wonderful Selkirk Place is. My father has been there for around 2 years now and I have visited him from Calgary a bunch of times. I find the facility extremely clean and the staff to be very friendly and caring. My father is well taken care of and it really helps put my mind at ease. I thank each and every member of this organization and must say that if you have a family member that ends up in this place - rest assured, they're in good hands! Sam

Appalling!! Selkirk Seniors Village is FOR PROFIT and is owned by a CHINESE INSURANCE COMPANY. In March 2018 Health Minister Adrian Dix said he was concerned about the potential impact on seniors who reside in Retirement Concepts homes in British Columbia after Chinese officials took control. My dad was placed here by VIHA in Feb 2019. As his representative I told administration not to give dad zopiclone and they said they would not. They gave it to him for 5 weeks without family knowledge. He was also over medicated once with zopiclone, trazodone and quietiapine and once with trazodone and zopiclone. Cleaning staff were scarce, the food quality was poor at best and they seemed to be consistently understaffed. The unit often smelled of urine. Now that dad is in a not for profit facility he is happier, the floors and unit are cleaned regularly and the food is of better quality and he is enjoying meals again. The staff is consistent, friendly and caring. Do not feel pressured to place your family member here, there are much better options.

My father's care was nonexistent. He was sent to the ER with what they said was a "small sore that may be infected." Now if you think that a bed sore that was the size os the end of a 2X4 filled with dead tissue and fecal matter is small then this is the place to send your loved ones, if however you care for those people then avoid this place. I wish we could give negative stars.

The care in this home is disgusting. The social worker never even came to see my loved one when he was placed in this home. She never bothered to see him when he left for another home. She is useless. She never returns phone calls . Don't know where she received her degree but she should not be in this field of work. The nurses are too busy with their daily reports to even bother to come and see a resident when they are clearly in need. Stay away from this place - never send your loved one here.
